Michael Brien Melvin

1981–2024

Michael Brien Melvin, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on April 30, 2024, in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Born on July 12, 1981, in Overland Park, Kansas, he spent his life leaving an indelible mark on those around him. Preceded in death by his wife Kandice Nicole Devenney, father James Keith Melvin, grandparents Keith James Melvin, Jean Melvin and Ruth Fraundorfer. Survived by his mother Teresa Anne LaMettery, sons Daxton James Melvin, Taelen Wayne Devenney, sisters Alicia Michelle Melvin and Christina Lee Melvin.

Mike’s journey began in the heart of Overland Park. As a young boy, he was a tow-headed blonde with an ornery spirit, always finding mischief around every corner. His father, Jim, affectionately nicknamed him “Jethro Bodine,” a nod to the beloved character from “The Beverly Hillbillies.” Even at a tender age, Mike’s love for music was evident. He could play almost any instrument placed before him, and his passion for melodies would shape his life in remarkable ways.

He attended Shawnee Mission West High School, where his musical talents blossomed. Mike’s passion then led him to Full Sail University in Florida, where he honed his skills and graduated with a degree in Music Production. His education fueled his creativity, and he carried that passion back to Kansas.

Mike’s love for music transcended mere notes on a page. He lived and breathed melodies, pouring his heart into every chord. At the tender age of five, he stood on stage alongside the legendary BB King, captivating the audience with his angelic voice. Throughout adulthood, Mike continued to share his gift with the world. As a singer and guitar player, he lent his talents to bands like “The Corpses,” “The Allsorts,” and “Whiskey Breath.” His performances resonated with audiences, leaving an indelible mark on the local music scene.

Mike’s greatest joy came from his family. His two sons, Taelen and Daxton, were the center of his universe. He spoke of their accomplishments with unwavering pride, cherishing every moment spent with them. Mike was not just a father; he was their confidant, teacher, and biggest fan. His love for them knew no bounds, and he reveled in their shared experiences, learning from them as much as he taught.

As we bid farewell to Mike, we remember a man who lived life fully, embracing music, family, and the simple joys that make our existence meaningful. His legacy lives on through the laughter, melodies, and memories he leaves behind. May his spirit continue to inspire us all.

A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 pm, May 11 at his sister Alicia Melvin's home in Overland Park.

Watched Melvin "grow up" with Jon, my son; playing in the Corpses band; hanging out with all the "kids" over the years. He is missed.
