Gloria Marcia Schlossenberg, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 28, 2017. She was born in Washington, D.C. Always interested in writing, Gloria wrote for the Children’s Page of the Evening Star when she was 14 and 15 years old. She became a copy girl on The Washington Post and was soon made a Reporter because even as a copy girl she was always bringing in stories to the Post. After she married Irving Schlossenberg (deceased February 2011) in 1946 they moved to the Maryland suburbs and she became very active in Democratic politics. Following 2 tragic pregnancies, she became a dedicated fighter for a woman’s right to choose. Because of her politics and helping to get people elected to Congress, she was selected to be one of the original women to take part in President Kennedy’s Head Start program. Also working with Senator Abe Ribicoff of Connecticut and Congressman Carlton Sickles of Maryland she helped get a Bill passed for feeding needy children through the summer months.
When Irving was promoted and relocated to Overland Park, Kansas, she continued her activities with the Democratic Party. For some years she was Vice Chair of the Johnson County Democrats. An excellent speaker and always active for choice for women, she spoke year after year before committees in the Kansas State Legislature and took part in many debates with Republicans.
Gloria also held seminars for those who wished to be active in politics. Until a few years ago, she continued to speak for groups in favor of choice.
Gloria and Irving loved to travel. They spent many winters in Florida, took cruises to Panama Canal, Alaska and the Caribbean, traveled to Europe, Israel and through Canada.
She was one of the founders of Congregation Kol Ami.
She leaves behind two sons Norman (Paula) and Marty (Thomas). She also leaves five grandsons Eric (Jana), Brian (Jovanna), David, Seth and Logan (Shannon), Granddaughter Danae (Al), ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in the Maryland area.
The family wishes to thank Seniors Helping Seniors, Brookdale Overland Park Glenwood and Kindred Hospice.
