JoAnn Hazel was born February 2, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio. She passed away at home in Independence, Missouri on May 13, 2018. She was 72.
Jo graduated from Lake High School in Millbury, Ohio and worked for the Northwood Schools for seventeen years. She is fondly remembered as “Jo the Bus Driver”. She was a member of Dendarah Court of Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America for 38 years and served as the High Priestess from 1990-1991.
Jo moved to Independence, MO in November of 1995 to be with her friend and partner, Edna Walraven. She worked briefly for Southwestern Bell (now AT&T) in Kansas City before retiring on disability. Jo and Edna shared a love of theatre as well as many other interests and experienced a wonderful 22 ½ years together, enjoying every day. Together they were complete.
She was her daughter Kimi’s BEST FRIEND and always will be. Jo loved to go fishing, enjoyed sports and was an avid Buckeye fan. You can be sure she will be yelling “O H” from heaven on game days.
So many tears are shed, but knowing she is no longer in pain is a small comfort. Edna now has a hole in her heart that is all consuming. Jo’s easy smile and playful personality will long be imprinted on the hearts of all who knew her. Family and friends will miss her so much but all are grateful to have been a part of her life.
Jo was a loving wife, mother, sister and aunt along with being a friend to many. She leaves her wife Edna, daughter Kim Hazel-Meyers (Jeri), brothers Ronald Spencer (Faye) and Don Spencer, brother-in-law Kenny Walraven and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edna will be receiving guests at her home at 4208 S Cottage Ave in Independence between 2 and 4 pm on Saturday, May 19 to honor Jo and celebrate her life. A memorial service will also be held in Toledo, Ohio at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be made to Dendarah Court in care of Zoellen Murphy, 7326 Starlight Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551 or to Tarrara Court in care of Claire Lindsey, 4929 S Norfleet Rd., Independence, MO 64055.
Until we see you again, Jo, WE LOVE YOU.
