Catherine Salisbury

Catherine Salisbury, 81, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 surrounded by family in her home. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018 at

St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection North.

Catherine was born February 22, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri to Phillip and Mamie (Bokarae) Raccuglia, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York.  She moved back to Kansas City after achieving a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition at Brooklyn College. She married Gilbert Mitchell and had five children. She is proceeded in death by her second husband, Wayne Salisbury. This marriage increased her family to include six step-children. She worked at Western Missouri Mental Health Facility in the dietary department; then for Holy Cross Catholic School in several positions.  She was active in many community programs and school boards at Holy Cross and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches in northeast Kansas City.

As an adult, Catherine graduated from Penn Valley Community College with a degree in nursing; then went on to obtain her Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Park University – graduating from both programs Summa Cum Laude.

She began her nursing career at General Hospital (now Truman Medical Center), but also worked at other local hospitals. She found her real passion in the world of home health by working with patients in their home environment surrounded by their family. This started with Catholic Charities, then Upjohn Health Care Services and Olsten Health Care. Later, she transitioned into healthcare management with Kendallwood Health Care Services and Nova Health Services. Her expertise was retained as a legal nurse consultant for a local labor law firm.

She served on the Collaboration Works’ board and in her spare time taught others her greatest passion - knitting, crocheting and quilting. She volunteered at North Kansas City Hospital for a number of years prior to her husband falling ill. She was a proud longstanding member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority since 1955 and was also a member of the Kansas City Chapter of the Daughters of Isabella for over 25 years.

Catherine is survived by her children – Cathy Ann (Frank) Liberto, Danny Mitchell, Teri Jo (Shawn) Connely, Bob Mitchell and Toni (Wayne) Orr. Her brother Salvatore Racculgia (Sara) of Long Island, New York.  Grandchildren: John (Savina) Liberto, Mary-Catherine (Chad) Reinert, Patrick Connely II, Katherine Connely, Karasteijn Mitchell, Chris Mitchell, Robyn Mitchell, Mitchell Orr and Bobby Orr. Catherine has five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her step-children were Chris (Jan) Salisbury, Laura (Bob) Thompson, Joe (Carla) Salisbury, Teri Diaz, Bobby Stringer, Matt (Mitzi) Salisbury with over 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren

Dear Teri and Family, While I did not have the honor of knowing your mom, she must have been a wonderful person because she raised an awesome daughter. She accomplished so much. What a special lady to raise a large family, attend college, work, and volunteer. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. She left a strong legacy and is now at peace and watching over you. May God give you strength and peace during this time.
