James Bryson Pulley
Feb 12,1933---Sep 22,2018

James Bryson Pulley, 85, died Saturday, September 22, 2018 at his home in Independence.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary (Evans) Pulley; his daughter, Cindi Harris (Gordon); his daughter, Abby Volmer (Lynn); his son Bryson Pulley (Audry); nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and brother Michael Louis Pulley, Springfield Missouri. He is pre-deceased by brother Jerry Pulley and parents Lee and Velma Pulley.

Born and raised in King City, Missouri, Mr. Pulley was a lifelong resident of Independence. In his early years, Mr. Pulley attended King City High School and played Center on the football team. After graduating from high school in 1951, he earned an Associate’s Degree from Southwest Baptist College. He was drafted into the Army in 1953 and returned to King City in 1955. After his return home, he began dating his future wife Mary Evans, who sang in their church choir. During the upcoming years, he attended Northwest Missouri State where he received his teaching degree, majoring in Biology and minoring in English. He and Mary married in 1958. In the summer of 1960, he received a Master’s Degree in Education from Central Missouri State University.

After graduating from college, Mr. Pulley took his first high school teaching assignment in Liberty School District. He transferred to Maple Park Junior High until the opening of Oak Park High School in 1965 where he taught biology for the rest of his career, retiring in 1993. Mr. Pulley took great pride in his teaching, but truly relished his time with family. A hobbyist, Mr. Pulley had a passion for astronomy, photography, poetry, and hiking. He spent one summer volunteer working on an archaeological dig at Cahokia Mounds in Illinois and another counting current bat populations in Missouri caves. Mr. Pulley passed on his passion for both science and love of words to his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Pulley was a strong Christian and, following his retirement, enjoyed his time teaching Adult Sunday School at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Blue Springs, Missouri.
