Mary Josephine (Grimm) Lyons

Mary Josephine (Grimm) Lyons was born on November 28, 1929 in Geddes, SD. Mary passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 in Kansas City, MO two weeks shy of her 89th birthday.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Ida Catherine Grimm of Pierce City and Joplin, MO. She graduated from St. Francis Academy in Nevada, MO and returned home to Pierce City to teach 4th and 5th grade as a lay teacher at St. Mary's Catholic School. When her parents moved to Joplin, MO she decided to move to Kansas City, MO to find work. She would soon meet her future husband, CPL Gilbert F. Lyons while volunteering with the USO at Ft. Leavenworth, KS Army Base.  Upon Gil's return from the Korean conflict they married at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD in 1953. After his service they moved to Maine where their first daughter, Kathryn, was born. They moved back to the Kansas City area where two more daughters, Linda and Donna, were born. Mary and Gil bought their first house and settled in Grandview, MO in 1960.

Mary was a member of the Coronation of our Lady Catholic Church Altar Society for many years and served as President in 1967-68. Sadly Mary's husband preceded her in death in 1968.  After his death, she worked at Richards-Gebaur AFB to support her daughters. When the base closed and her daughters were young adults she followed the work to Scott AFB in Belleville, IL.  In the early 80s, Mary moved to Waynesville/St Roberts, MO where she opened her own gift shop 'Mary's Bright Ideas'.  In the early 90s, Mary moved to Sunrise Beach/Laurie, MO where she enjoyed the serenity of the lake and nature. She absolutely loved cardinals and watching any wildlife that would appear outside her window.

She eventually moved back to Grandview, MO to be closer to her daughters and grandsons. She spent her final years at the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jungan Center in Raytown, MO.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers John and Robert Grimm her sisters Donna Mae Grimm and Patricia Hutchings. She is survived by her brothers George Grimm of Joplin, MO and James Grimm of East Troy, WI.  She is also survived by her daughters Kathryn Lyons of Grandview, MO, Linda Lyons of Kansas City, MO and, Donna White of Potossi, MO; two grandsons Joseph and Justin Lyons of Olathe, KS and several great grandchildren.
