Harland Curtis O'Rear, Age: 81
Mar 26, 1938 - May 28, 2019

Harland Curtis O’Rear, 81, of Kansas City, MO died on May 28, 2019, peacefully in his sleep. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019, at North Oak Christian Church, located at 9900 N. Oak Trafficway,  Kansas City, MO 64155. The visitation will be from 6pm-9pm. Curt requested no flowers.

Curt was born March 26, 1938 in Kansas City, MO on the East side. He was a graduate of East High School, class of ’58. Curt was preceded in death by his parents, Harland Preston O’Rear in 2000 and Merrie Curtis O’Rear in 1995.

He leaves behind his family; son, Ryan Curtis; son, Matthew Shannon, his wife Mandy, daughters Madison and Lochlyn; son, Brett Joseph, his wife Amber and daughter Waylon; his brother Darrell, his wife Elaine; nephew Jeff and his wife Paula, daughters Michelle and Melaina, nephew Justin and his daughter Leah.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends.

After graduation, he left Minute Circle behind to protect the free world from communism by joining the United States Marines Corps.  As the Captain’s Orderly aboard the USS Princeton, he got to experience the many wonderful cultures of the Pacific, including his favorite place, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He was Honorably Discharged in 1964 at the rank of Corporal.

Curt continued his service to the community when in 1962 he joined the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department. His career spanned over 3 ½ decades. He retired from KCFD in 1998. He continued to work at Quality Wood Products and later Profile Cabinets.

In retirement Curt enjoyed being with family, friends, and especially spending time with his granddaughters.

Curt was complicated with a fiery personality;  however, he was a loveable son of a bitch. One day he would fight you and the next day he would give you the shirt off his back. He loved smokey old pool rooms, little warm puppies, Johnny Cash, racecars, and riding his tractor cutting the yard while drinking a Corona.  He was one of God's own prototypes, never considered for mass production. Curt will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

grade school friend ,Independence ,Missouri

I went to Ashland Elementary School. I was in the class with Curtis' brother, Darryl. They lived right across the street from the school. I would often watch the boys walk home and wish that I was a better friend to ride bikes or go to the Park with them. This never happened, I moved my 7th. grade to Independence. But, the memories of the boys is always a good one, one of more simple times and always with a smile. I am glad to know that Curtis had such a interesting life and want to say Hello to Darryl.
