Calvin Eugene “Gene” Moeller

13 February 1925 – 26 May 2019

Calvin Eugene Moeller was ushered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 26th, 2019 at the age of 94. His close friends and family knew him as “Gene”.

Calvin was born to August Esra Moeller and Cora Marguerite (Comer) Moeller on February 13th, 1925 in Erie, Kansas. His early years were spent in rural Neosho County, Kansas along with an older sister Marian and a younger sister Merle. He had an older brother Richard who died at age 3 while Calvin was less than a year old.

After relocating to a farm in Brown Country, Kansas, Calvin graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1942. He was active in 4-H and excelled at playing the French horn in the school band.

Early in 1944, Calvin enlisted in the Army Air Force and on October 10th, 1944 he was deployed to Peleliu in the Pacific. As a cryptographic technician, Calvin played a key role in the coded communications needed to coordinate troop and supply movement in the Pacific Theater. He was subsequently reassigned to Guam in July 1945 and became a part of the 147th Army Airways Communications System Squadron.

Following the conclusion of the war, Sgt. Calvin E. Moeller was given an Honorable Discharge from the 777th Army Air Forces Base at Fort Logan, Colorado on March 22nd, 1946. Many war-time memories resurfaced when he was selected to participate in the 2018 Heartland Honor Flight (a program established to send veterans to Washington, DC to see their Memorials free of charge).

Returning to civilian life, he took advantage of the opportunities afforded by the GI Bill of Rights and attended Kansas State University, earning a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. While attending Kansas State University, Calvin met the love of his life Nadine Isabel Shultz at a barn dance in nearby Wamego, Kansas. They were subsequently married at the Kansas State University Chapel on May 28th, 1950.

Taking a position as a research engineer at Midwest Research Institute, Calvin and his bride Nadine moved to Bonner Springs, Kansas. While working at Midwest Research Institute, he developed a side business of fabricating specialized thermocouples that he marketed world-wide. In the mid-1960’s, Calvin spoke at a Thermocouple Symposium in Germany.

In 1972, Calvin took a position with Black & Veatch where he worked until retirement (unless you include the years spent as a Walmart greeter while in his 80’s!).

Gene enjoyed photography and never passed the opportunity to shoot a beautiful sunset or a budding flower. He could always be found behind a camera at family events. Gene and Nadine also became very active in the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association and are well known among the membership. While Nadine rode the show horses, Gene captured video and eventually became the official videographer for the MFTHBA.

Gene will be remembered as a loving husband and father. His gentle spirit and optimistic attitude will be missed. Greater than these attributes were his love for the Lord and his willingness to share a scripture or prayer with a stranger. His weaknesses were buffets and desserts.

Calvin leaves behind Nadine, his wife of nearly 69 years; his 3 children Chris R. Moeller, Debra L. (Moeller) Gengelbach, and Brent A. Moeller; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday June 15th, 2019 at Tiffany Fellowship Church, 7315 NW Barry Road, Kansas City, MO 64153, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Cremation rites have been accorded and interment of ashes will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
