John Edward Sens
Jan 17,1948---Jun 21,2019

John Edward Sens, husband, brother, and step-father, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019. He is survived by his wife Maria Sens (Montelongo), his sister Janet Unruh (Sens), and two step-children, Vanessa and Matthew Montelongo. Maria and Janet were with him during his final moments.

Born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on January 17, 1948 John spent most of his childhood in Great Bend, Kansas.

John joined the Navy after graduating from Great Bend High School in 1966. He served 4 years during the Vietnam war and was honorably discharged in 1970.

John was employed by Ruskin Dampers and Louvers for 47 years semi-retiring in 2012 as National Architectural Sales Manager and fully retiring in 2019. During that time John made many friends in the Air Control industry where his commitment and dedication was respected by all.

John will be deeply missed by his family and friends, each of whom can testify to the unique way that he brought joy into their lives. Loyal and loving, John was most often found on the golf course or with a fishing rod in hand. He frequently spent his evenings entertaining his neighbors around the cul-de-sac with tales of his “wild” youth, slightly off-color jokes, and vodka and cranberry cocktails made just right.

Generous and kind, John was quick to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. He and Maria created a loving home, which was frequently filled with guests - and cats. To his step children, whom he met far too late in life, he was a constant source of support. An unexpected father figure who provided them with encouragement and most important, love.

John will be remembered for how he lived - with a smile on his face, a baseball cap on his head, loving life and all those around him.

There will be a graveside service at the Higginsville Veterans Cemetery, 20129 Business Hwy 13, on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 3:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the VFW  Hall, 329 SE Douglas St., Lee's Summit, MO.   In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s honor may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Marie and Janet, I will always remember the many fishing and golf trips that John and I had together the past 30 years. I especially enjoyed the stories he told growing up in Great Bend and his time in the Navy. John was like having a big brother.

I didn't know John that long. I started working with him in dec 2017. He was one of the first at Ruskin to strike up a friendly conversation with me. He always greeted me with a smile and had something happy or funny to relate when we passed each other during the workday. His jovial nature was a noted attribute to working here and will be dearly missed.

Marie and Janet my heartfelt condolences are with you and your family. John and I have worked together at Ruskin for 46 years and have shared many enjoyable and humorous times and conversation together. John was a role model employee and friend that all can and many have learned to model from. He shall always be remembered for his positive, can do and humorous attitude to work through some of the not so good work situations while winning over both the customer and subordinate employee’s confidence and respect for the person he was. Many of us who knew and spent time with John will carry him with us in our days ahead as we use the wisdom and talents that he passed on to us through his role model and friendship we shared. John will be dearly missed by all but are blessed to have our lives touched by his. Well Done my Friend! I plan to see you again.

Maria - Our condolences and sympathies to you and your family. John meant so much to me. He was always thinking of how he could support and serve others - especially the RUSKIN customers. John knew what success looked like. It began with treating others with respect and kindness. He was empathetic to others needs. Always a great listener and a quick smile. I will always remember his famous dead-pans after a funny joke. He was creative and so supportive of others needs. He loved you, he loved life, and he enjoyed every moment. We all learned a lot from John. Tom and Cathy Edwards

John was the best friend I have had in my lifetime. We shared many fishing trips and consistently poor golf outings. Our camping skills left a little to be desired but we made it work. We became instant friends in 1981 when we both were relocated to Grandview, Mo with Ruskin. His friendship extended to my family and will be remembered for lifetimes. I believe that I will see him again one day.

John was an awesome man. Great to be around at work and on the golf course. Trips to Bella Vista were always entertaining and filled with joy he had for life and for others. May God be at your side Maria as you go through this difficult time but I believe he is consistently shooting scratch golf now even with that unique swing of his!
