Mary Kathleen Koenig passed away Sunday January 5th at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.  Loving mother of Kate and John (Dana), cherished grandmother to Sarah.  Survived by her brothers and sisters, James Piros (Ruth), Robert Piros (Sherry), Laura McCarver (John), Julie Diskin, and Mark Piros (Ann) and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mary dedicated her life to helping people. She was a registered nurse who started her career in the ER at Mercy Hospital in Chicago.  After taking a break from nursing to raise her two children, Mary went back to work at the SaveHome in Kansas City where she assisted men with HIV in their final days.  Her work at the SaveHome was recognized by Elizabeth Taylor who came to Kansas City to meet Mary and her staff. Mary still carried the picture of the two of them in her wallet.  Mary continued to help and serve others and spent her retirement years housesitting, dog walking, and looking after her neighbors at John Knox Village in Lees Summit, Missouri.  Mary passed away with family and friends at her side.  It was Mary's wishes to be cremated and a memorial is planned for the spring.  More information on date and location will be shared with family and friends when available.
