Carol McCraner

Carol McCraner, 64, of Shawnee, KS passed away unexpectedly January 28, 2020 at home. Her Visitation will be 9:30 am with a Mass following at 10:30, Tuesday, February 18 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 W 71st Street, Overland Park, KS 66204.

Carol was born September 16, 1955 in Denver, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary McCraner. She is survived by her siblings Ann Taylor (Michael), Jean McCraner (Lea Jones) of Eugene Oregon, Jim McCraner, Susan Bell (Marvin), nieces Amy Smith (Shawn) Meredith Bell, nephews Evan Bell and Will Jones, great niece Taylor Smith and Aunt Maggie McPhee of Houston, Texas. along with many friends.

Carol was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary parish since 1965. She graduated from the grade school there in 1969 and Shawnee Mission West High School in 1973. She received her BS from Kansas State University in Early Childhood Education which she utilized as the director of a day care in Hutchison, Kansas after graduating. She moved back to Kansas City and worked in the business world and then found her true calling as a sacristan and wedding coordinator at her Church.

If you were fortunate enough to know Carol, you know how well she cared for others. She dedicated herself to the care of both her parents when their health declined – extending her time and energy in such a way that none of her siblings could have accomplished. She loved children and the elderly. She volunteered countless hours as a School of Religion teacher for first graders and loved making visits to nursing homes where she developed wonderful relationships. Carol had a special friendship with Fr. Tom Kearns from Queen and helped him organizing pictures and stories of his life over the years. Carol never forgot a birthday, anniversary, first days of school and sporting events for her nieces and nephew. She was always the one checking in on people and praying for their needs. She made everyone feel they were the most important person in her life. If you knew Carol, you knew love.

Carol rests in peace now and is reunited with her mom and dad whom she loved and missed dearly since their deaths. Those that knew her will now have an empty place in their hearts but joy in the memories of her sweet, kind spirit.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to a charity of your choice.

With sympathy for Carol's family, especially her brother. Carol has been my friend for many years now. I got to see how she was a devoted Catholic. She was generous of spirit to many over the years. She visited nursing homes, helped her friends countless times. She had a close relationship with her brother. She was so kind and thoughtful. I will miss her friendship, but will carry her spirit with me.

I am so sorry for the entire family and it sure sounds like all will have many good memories of Carol to help carry them through this very difficult time. 1969 Classmate, Queen of The Holy Rosary ,Overland Park ,Kansas

Carol is the Queen of our graduating class "Queen of the Holy Rosary" 1969. She was the first to keep us informed of our fellow classmates over the many years. Our family experienced her love and compassion directly and truly appreciated her kindness. Our "Queen" is with the Lord, however her compassion and kind Spirit will always live within me and our family. Jim Malinowski, class of 1969.

It was just days before I got the news that I had an email exchange with Carol and then suddenly she was gone. All the memories of slumber parties at the McCraner house...going to the movies...Girl Scout events...our trip to Washington...days that turned into years at QHR...and working together on our class reunion many years later when my children were students at our same grade school...the memories all came flooding back. Carol was a constant - her smile - her gift for listening - her easy laugh - and most of all her compassion. In a bittersweet moment Carol has indeed found her wings. And I will miss her more than words can express.

Carol and I met in the Dominic Club and became good friends. When Carol moved in to take care of her mom, we would get together for walks around her mom’s neighborhood after work. We talked the whole time about any and everything. The interesting thing about our walks was not the topics we chose to discuss, but the pattern of our walk. Carol was deaf in her right ear and I am blind in my right eye, so we always start out with Carol on my left so I could see her, but Carol would sidle over behind me to the other side so she could hear me. I would suddenly look and not be able to see her. She would do this over and over on our walks and I never remembered this was her pattern until I lost sight of her again. We laughed and laughed about our mis-matched efforts to see and hear each other while we walked. I will always remember our wonderful walks and all the small ways Carol’s friendship affected my life. She never forgot a birthday, she always remembered to pray for me and others who were sick or needed support, and she always thought to call and catch up, checking on me and my family and reminding me what a thoughtful and genuine friend she was. Carol, I will always miss you.

Carol was one of my best friends. I had known her for over 30 years & we did many fun things together during those years. She was kind. She spent a lot of time with her brother & she visited the sick. She was a social person & had many friends. I am going to miss her & I know many other people will also but she won't be forgotten. God bless you Carol and may the angels welcome you into paradise.

Carol was a good friend of mine. We met in the singles group. There are so many memories I could share, but this most recent one, is very dear to my heart. My Dad had passed away in June 2016. I received many sympathy cards from family & friends. Carol sent me a card a few days later, and in that card, she had a mass said for my Dad. I was very surprised. I sent her a thank you card & told her, “Thanks for thinking of my Dad!” This shows how Carol was a kind & true friend. I would occasionally forget her birthday, but she would always send me a birthday card every year. I will miss her friendship.
