Diane Elizabeth (Boomer) Marshall

Diane Elizabeth (Boomer) Marshall passed away on September 19, surrounded by her three children. She was born May 11, 1949 in Toledo, Ohio to Lyman and Grace Boomer. Diane spent her early years living in Winchester, MA, Palatine, IL, and Fort Madison, IA, with summers spent vacationing at Point Lookout in Michigan with her cousins, a tradition she later continued with her own children.

Diane graduated from Cornwall High School in Cornwall, NY and followed her brother and sister to the University of Kansas, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was a graduate fellow in Special Education at KU, while earning her master’s degree. She began her career at the Youth Center in Topeka, KS and later taught in the Blue Valley School District before retiring in 2008. She had a gift for making meaningful connections with students and was always an amazing advocate for them.

In 1972, she married David Marshall at the First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Together they raised three children and created an everlasting legacy. They will always be remembered by all who knew them for graciously hosting family holidays, as well as countless celebrations for friends. Diane loved to cook and was very creative – she made every occasion extra special!

Diane is preceded in death by her husband, David – their reunion in heaven is a joyous vision! She is survived by her children: Betsy (husband Eric) Roadman of Lee’s Summit, Katie (husband Andy) Betts of Overland Park, and Jed Marshall of Prairie Village. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Drew, John and Grace Roadman and AJ, Paige and Patrick Betts. Diane also leaves her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Lynda Boomer of Macomb, IL; her sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Gary Stevens of Indian Harbor Beach, FL; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Patti Marshall of Edmond, OK, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews, and many good friends.

A celebration of Diane’s life will be Saturday, October 3rd at 2:00 in the lawn on the west side of the parking lot at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Avenue. Face masks and social distancing will be expected. People can gather in the grass and bring their own chairs or sit in their cars with windows down to listen to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church.

I just adored your mom. I will be forever grateful for her help in the church office and will miss her great sense of humor. She sent the sweetest note to me just before i moved out of state a few weeks ago in her beautiful handwriting which i will always treasure. Much love to all of you, Andrea Edgeller

Many years ago I was babysitting for families overnight & was asked by David & Diane to stay in their home. David & I went to Topeka High so that was a connection as was Rolling Hills. Recently Diane & I had more connections at church. I always admired her kindnesses to everyone & her creativity in all she did. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Betsy, Katy, and Jed - we were all very saddened to hear of your Mom’s passing. We treasure all the memories we shared with your family. Wonderful childhood friendships and many happy times we were blessed to share. Your Mom and I had so much fun doing scouts together. She was so giving, creative and so much fun. I know you and your families will greatly miss her. I’m sure your folks are rejoicing together in heaven. We all send our love and prayers for your comfort. With sympathy and love, The King Family

I am deeply saddened as I have only just come to know of the passing of the the most important woman in my youth aside from my own mother. Mrs. Marshall taught me that no matter how hard I tried to sabotage my well being that I am indeed a smart and kind being deserving of all things good. I have missed her guidance and often considered reaching out to let her know that because of her influence I have more confidence, more meaningful relationships and a broader love for all people under all circumstances. I regret not having caught up (which was my intent) rather than posting condolences and love for her, her spirit and her ability to encourage the unencouragable. Love to her family.
