Martha (Marty) Frances Slaughter

July 9, 1926 – October 1, 2020

Martha (Marty) Frances Slaughter of Overland Park, Kansas and formerly of Belton and Peculiar, Missouri, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 1, 2020.  She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

An outdoor graveside service will be held on Monday, October 12 at 1:00pm at Mount Moriah, 10507 Holmes Road in Kansas City, Missouri.  Social distancing will be observed.

Marty was born on July 9, 1926 in Ellis, Kansas to Henry F. and Martha E. Shinn. The Shinns lived in Bunceton, Missouri until 1942 when they moved to Kansas City. Marty graduated from Paseo High School in 1944.

Marty was married to Robert J. Greenwell in October 1954. Their daughter, Gayle, was born in 1955.  Marty was then married to Henry James (Jim) Slaughter in August 1973.  Mr. Slaughter preceded Marty in death in February 2004.

As a single mother, Marty worked several jobs to support herself, her daughter, as well as close friends and others in need. These positions included clerking at Bernice Jackson’s Reporting, a dance instructor at Arthur Murray’s Studio, legal secretary at Wallace and Saunders, and apartment leasing manager at Georgetown Apartments.

Marty was always active throughout her life. She loved horses, caring for them and riding in local parades. She spent many winters in Florida in an RV with Jim. They fished and made close friends wherever they parked their RV for the winters. Marty also enjoyed skeet shooting, playing cards, hiking, traveling, baking, and canning the produce from their vast garden.

Above all, Marty was a dedicated Christian who loved the Lord and shared her faith with all she met. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1969 and, in her words, “My life was transformed from darkness into light. It has been a joy and pleasure to serve the Lord”.  Marty had an endless capacity for love, generosity, and joy that drew others to her, a River of Living Water that flowed from her because of her close relationship with Jesus Christ. Her life of prayer and love for the Word of God continued even during her final years.

Marty leaves behind her daughter, Gayle (Tom, Jr.) Gonterman, grandsons Tom (Johnna) Gonterman III and Nathan Gonterman, and six great-grandchildren.

Marty left the following for Gayle:

“My most precious and loving daughter… always caring, always from her heart. We are not separated for long. Jesus and I will be waiting for you and yours. I love you – Mom”

Gayle...I have wonderful memories of your mother. Her words were always praising Jesus. My mother adored her. She was truly one of kind. A blessing. And today she is still praising Jesus.
