Cleo George Lowry, Jr.

Cleo George Lowry, Jr., died peacefully in Kansas City, MO on April 4, 2021 at the age of 87.

Cleo is survived by his children Jim Lowry (Pam) of Flower Mound, TX, Johnna Duncan (Jan) of Roeland Park, KS, David Lowry (Laura) of Platte City, MO, Tom Lowry of Gladstone, MO, 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents Cleo and Caroline Lowry.

Cleo was born on June 9, 1933 in Albia, IA.  He attended Iowa State University and received his Industrial Engineering Degree.  He married Karen Wilson in 1955 and they moved to Michigan where he worked with General Motors before moving to New Orleans, LA to work with NASA and then Burlington, IA where he worked with Silas-Mason at the Iowa Ordinance Plant as an Engineer.  But his real passion was investments and working with people.

In 1970 Cleo changed career directions and went to work with Chittenden & Eastman Company (furniture dealer network) in Burlington as a salesperson and this took him and his family to Salina, KS.  He traveled selling furniture throughout Kansas and started studying for his Investment licenses.  In 1980 he took a job as an Investment Advisor with AG Edwards & Sons in Overland Park KS.  As anyone that knew Cleo will tell you “he found his passion” – investing!  He “worked” (went into the office) with Wells Fargo Advisors until he was 82 and then decided to retire.  Although he never quit studying the market.

In addition to stocks, Cleo loved to travel.  In 1985 he married Barb Mahrer and they traveled the world together.  Of all the trips they took, he would say the trip to China and the 30 day cruise in the Mediterranean were his favorites.  He told everyone he knew “travel while you have your health and can enjoy things”.  He mentioned those same words in the last months of his life to all his children.

The family is planning a Celebration of Cleo’s life sometime this summer/fall when COVID allows, so in lieu of flowers please consider donations to the St. Luke’s Hospice House.  He was so thankful for his short time there and their compassionate care in his final days.
