Neil Alexander Grant

August 18, 1934 - November 16th, 2022

Neil Grant passed away at the age of 88 on November 16th surrounded by loved ones at KC Hospice House. His positive attitude and gentle spirit guided him through a 10-year battle with Non-Hodgkin Mantel Cell Lymphoma.

Neil was born in Kansas City, Missouri at Saint Joseph Hospital on August 18th, 1934, to Morrison and Louise Grant of Mission, Kansas. He grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Central High School in 1952. He attended CMSU and Kansas City University and served two years in the Army in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He played second base and outfield on Ban Johnson league Baseball teams into his college years and was an Eagle Scout attending Scout Camp each summer. He was inducted into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say as a Boy Scout.

During his 47-year career, Neil played a leading role in helping build House of Lloyd in Grandview, Missouri. Neil was the founder Harry Lloyd’s first employee! His leadership, passion and commitment helped build House of Lloyd from importer and seller of fireworks as well as small gift items to House of Lloyd’s position as one of the largest party plan sales companies in the United States. At some time over the years, Neil had led virtually every department in the company. Starting with, he would say with pride, “Firecracker Packer.”

During his last few years while serving as Executive Vice President, Neil spent an increasing amount of time serving as General Manager of Loch Lloyd before his final retirement. Neil was honored by House of Lloyd in 1990 with the development of the “Neil Grant Award.” This award was created in honor of Neil for his faithful service to House of Lloyd and was awarded annually to the person exemplifying these qualities. Loyalty – Ability – Caring – Attitude

Neil’s loyalty and caring service to others extended beyond his work at House of Lloyd. He was a member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Neil also served many years on the Ozanam Pathways Board; where he was active in the yearly Ozanam auction and served as a mentor to the youth at Cornerstone of Care.

Neil studied history and often used the lessons of history to guide his decisions in work and in life. His work enabled him to visit many countries throughout the world where he gained a deeper appreciation of a variety of cultures, inclusive of their stories and perspectives.

Neil’s love of the outdoors was evident in his passion for hiking and skiing in Colorado, and gardening at home. The family trips with Neil to the YMCA of the Rockies brought many fond memories of his cheerful and encouraging outlook.

He was a loving, caring husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Donna Grant. His four children: Scott Grant (Jackie), Diana Benson (Nick), Laura Waters (Kale) and Steven Grant (Shelley). His 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Neil is also survived by his two sisters Nancy McKibben and Margarette Grant as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friend ,Overland Park ,Kansas

Steve, I was sad to see the obituary for Mr Grant in the KC Star today. I can recall good memories of working at the firework stands during high school. We were given small calculators to add up the fireworks and I hated when I accidently pressed clear in the middle of a large transaction. We would celebrate the end of the holiday with a good bottle rocket fight. And then there was junior prom in one of his big cars. Mostly though I enjoyed seeing Mr Grant at his internal med doctor visits as I work at the front desk. He humored me in laughing at these memories. God bless you and your family.

Condolences to the Grant family. I remember working the fireworks stands in the summers during my high school years with Mr. Grant and his children. One summer Mr. Grant had me drive his car with the trunk loaded with fireworks to restock the fireworks tent in Columbia, MO.

Dear Donna, You are in my thoughts and prayers. Neil was a great friend and role model for the Ozanam children. He also was a true friend and mentor to me and I appreciated all of the support he gave to me as a member of the Ozanam Board of Directors and later is activity with Cornerstones of Care.
