Wayne Watson Miller

Wayne Watson Miller of Leawood, KS. a Kansas City area businessman, investor and entrepreneur, died Sept. 30.  He was 90 years old.

 

Wayne was a long-standing member of the Kansas City investment Corp., an investment club of Kansas City principals. He served as President or secretary/treasurer during much of his 40-year tenure. He was also a member of the Vanguard Club of Kansas City.

 

A graduate of the McCallie School of Chattanooga (1952) and Princeton University (1956), Wayne then served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married the former Martha Funk of Louisville, KY in 1957.

 

Wayne spent 12 years with IBM in Louisville, Chicago and New York City before Waddell and Reed moved the family to the Kansas City area in 1972. After 10 years with Waddell and Reed, Wayne and Martha started their own business, a franchise which they operated for 19 years. Other business ventures followed.

 

Wayne loved to talk football, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and University of Tennessee Volunteers. Landscaping and gardening were his hobbies. He took great pride in his home and lawn, installing his own sprinkler system from start to finish.

 

Wayne belonged to Village Presbyterian Church of Prairie Village, KS where he served on the board of directors, taught church school and worked in the food pantry delivering food to those in need.

 

Wayne and Martha spent winters in Naples, FL. Mrs. Miller passed away in 2016.

 

Wayne is survived by his daughter Pamela Wayne Miller (Frisco, Tx); grandson Drake O’Neil Miller (Frisco, TX); brother Michael (Pamela) Miller (Durham, NC); sister-in-law Carolyn Miller (Asheville NC); nephew Loye (Elizabeth) Miller III (Rehoboth Beach, DE); nieces Lissa (Larry) Thompson (Lake Oswego, OR),  Gretchen (Dave) Coie (Asheville, NC), Laurel (Tom Catmull) Miller, Missoula, MT; and great-niece Kate Thompson (Portland, OR). He was preceded in death by his wife Martha F Miller (Leawood, KS), his son Bryan Wheat Miller (Leawood KS) and his brother Loye Miller (West Lebanon, NH).


A memorial service will be held at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS on Tuesday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of hope and sympathy can be directed to Village Presbyterian Church, and to Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri, 8837 Roe Avenue, Prairie Village, KS 66207.

I remember Wayne on the Saturday morning sidelines for those early year soccer games. He and Martha so loved and supported you and Drake. Extending to you our deepest sympathies. May you take comfort that Wayne is at peace and reunited with Martha.
