Rose Marie Schwankl 93, passed away on November 16, 2024. Rose was born to Pasquale and Biondina Baratto in 1931 on the Mesabi Iron Range in Hibbing, Minnesota. Because of financial hardship during the Great Depression, she, at age 9, wanted a job and was hired to manage a candy concession at the local movie theater.  She continued working various jobs, saving her wages while excelling academically through all phases of her education and graduated with honors. Rose's personal savings provided the financing needed to pursue a 4 year college degree in education, and in 1949, she entered  the University of St. Cloud, in St. Cloud. Minnesota. She surprised everyone by earning her degree in just 3 years.

Rose met a very special man, Charles (Chuck) Schwankl while at school in St. Cloud.  They married in 1952 in Hibbing, Minnesota. Chuck and Rose relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, where Rose had a position teaching school and Chuck entered government service.  In 1958 Chuck was assigned to a new position with the  IRS in St. Paul, MN where Rose continued teaching.  Another promotion for Chuck took the couple to Elmhurst, IL near Chicago where Rose again found a teaching position and earned her masters degree, and their daughter Julie was born. Chuck was transferred to the Philippines and the family spent several years in Manila. Finally, the family permanently settled in Overland Park, KS where Rose taught for the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and later the Turner School District. 

Rose was an amazing cook, whether it was a casual meal or an elaborate feast, she always provided exceptional dishes that left everyone craving more. Rose was always up for an adventure and enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends. She was an avid supporter of the arts and enjoyed the ballet, opera and theater. 

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Schwankl, Bucyrus, KS, her brother Eugene Baratto, Somerset, WI, and her sister Lucia Shoberg, Duluth, MN. 

The funeral service is open to friends and family who wish to pay their respects. The service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Parish, 11300 W 103rd St, Overland Park, KS 66214 on December 4th, visitation at 10:00 with a service at 11:00. Following the funeral service, there will be light refreshments and a reception to be held at the church.
