Helen Marie Miller Kent, 97, died on November 1 in Overland Park, Kansas.
Helen was born on August 24, 1929, in Wyandotte, Kansas, to Thomas and Helen Miller.
Helen attended Turner High School, was a trumpet player in the marching band and played on the basketball team. She also participated in 4-H, often entering the County Fair.
Helen was a talented artist, enjoying drawing, watercolor and crafting. She worked as a cake decorator for Balls Food Stores after having a small cake decorating business from home. Her decorated cakes even won ribbons at the Wyandotte County Fair. In addition, she shared her musical talent with the local community, playing the piano for local congregations.
She served as the president of the Enlisted Wives club in 1968, when the Kansas Army National Guard 69th Infantry Brigade was mobilized. Helen was a member of a local Hallmark collecting club. She enjoyed working on word search and jigsaw puzzles, gardening, and traveling. She traveled most of the United States, plus parts of Canada, Europe, and Mexico. A favorite activity was to watch the birds and squirrels in the backyard.
She not only encouraged exploration of artistic talent but also competitive gameplay. She taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to play checkers and would spend hours playing any games demanded of her. Helen often hosted large family holiday dinners, passing on family traditions and even took on the daunting task of making Povitica from a recipe passed down from her mother and grandmother.
Helen is preceded in death by her brother Tommy and son Clifford. She is survived by her children, Myra, Greg, Jeff, and Martha; sisters Rosalie and Darlene; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.
