Donald Joseph Del Vecchio

Donald Joseph Del Vecchio died on October 20, 2019 at St. Luke’s South hospital in Overland Park, KS.

Don was born on September 10, 1939 in Newton, MA. In 1947 after a stay in the St. Joseph orphanage in Abilene, KS Don lived with the Henry Goeckel family in Hanover, KS. Don served in the United States Army and was a proud veteran and supporter the military throughout his life. In 1968 Don married Mercedes Vizcarra and started a family in Des Moines, IA. Don and Mercedes were divorced in 1982.

Don relocated to Waterloo, IA and operated a business in the home improvement industry until 1999 when he relocated to Overland Park, KS.  Don moved to Overland Park to be closer to his sons and granddaughters Aubrey and Emily. Don continued his career in home improvement until 2001 when he “retired” and spent the next several years working in the accounts receivable industry. Don officially retired in 2006.

Don was preceded in death by his sister Vera Gordanier (Del Vecchio) on July 20, 2009. Don is survived by a loving family.

Don was kind and generous man of strong faith. Don’s strong sense of humor and quick wit were well known by those who knew him. Don was an intensely private man who seldom asked for help from those around him. Don, however, was always the first to aid anyone in need. Don spent his last years exploring his faith. Don would often challenge his family and friends to more deeply pursue their faith. Don’s favorite pastime was horse racing. He spent many hours analyzing and watching races from around the country.

The Del Vecchio family would like to thank the entire staff at St. Luke’s South hospital. The staff showed tremendous professionalism and compassion during his final days.
