Sally Jean (Sydow) Hornback

Sally Jean (Sydow) Hornback, age 79 of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on February 6, 2020 surrounded by her family at Olathe Health Hospice House, after a year long battle with Breast Cancer.

Sally was born March 4, 1940 to Dr. Arnold F. and Mildred C. (Kropf) Sydow in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father passed in 1945. When Sally was 12 her mother remarried Dr. Thomas H Borland. She graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1958 then went on to William Woods College, earning her associates degree in 1960. In November 1963, she met Charles "Chuck" Hornback, they were married May 22, 1965 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where they lived for 2 years before moving to Fort Lee, New Jersey. Sally worked at the National Enquirer as an office assistant for a few months. She continued doing general office duties while Chuck attended NYU for his Post-Doctoral Fellowship. After 6 years, in 1973, they moved to Overland Park, KS, where they built their life together. In April of 1975, their son John was born followed by their daughter Christen "Christy" in September of 1976.

Sally and Chuck were very involved with their church. Sally worked at the kids grade school as a library assistant, helping in classes, whatever was needed. Sally then went on to work in the Daycare Program with one year olds at Valley View Church. After 20+ years, she retired in 2003.

Sally was involved with John and Christy’s extra curricular activities. Whether it was helping John acquire his bicycling badge for Cub Scouts or Christy with her dance recital as a monkey dealing with stage fright. She often became their chauffeur taking them to their friends houses, to practices, to school, wherever they needed to go.

She loved her sports, especially K-State Football, KU Basketball, the Kansas City Chiefs and KC Royals. It really didn’t matter who was playing though, if there was a game on TV, Sally was watching. She loved being pampered and her favorite flower was the rose, just not red ones. Sally was involved in many groups, where she formed long lasting friendships; from ladies bridge, to mahjong, to Sunday School class, to their couples movie group.

She loved going out with her friends, whether it was shopping, Dinner Theatre, KC Starlight, or the KC Music Hall. She also loved to travel and when Chuck retired they went on two Alaskan and a Hawaiian cruise.

In 2004, Sally became a grandmother for the first time, then again in 2006. From that moment, they never missed celebrating their granddaughters birthdays in Colorado.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, step-brother, Dr. Thomas R Borland, her mother and father in-law, John and Lola Hornback, and sister-in-law, Kathy Hornback.

She is survived by her husband Charles and beloved dog, Tucker of the home, sister Patricia Dupler, Martinez, CA; son John (Jamie) Hornback, Olathe, KS; daughter Christen (Steve) Johnston, granddaughters, Haley and Sabrina Johnston, Golden CO, niece, Kathy Ocean, Guerneville, CA, and great-nephews and nieces, along with a host of life-long friends.

Gary and Nancy Bernhardt Feb 14, 2020

Fellow Tenor in Chancel Choir for many years as was my wife Nancy as an alto. Chuck was the choir librarian and we always saw him help to get to her spot in church before he took his seat in the Chancel Choir. ,OverlandPark ,Kansas

Always enjoyed Chuck’s humor in choir practices as he had the “tenor voice” making sure the music was correct and any German words in a musical piece were spoken in HochDeutsch. I did assist in some correct pronunciation as I had studied die deutsche Sprache for three years at KU.
