Elizabeth Ann Heide, Ed. D.

Elizabeth Ann Heide, Ed. D., (née Marvin) died peacefully with her family surrounding her on February 21, 2020, at the age of 47.

Beth was born on December 18, 1972, in Westminster, Colorado, to William and Laurie (Marr) Marvin. She graduated from Northglenn (Colorado) High School in 1991. She attended Colorado State University, Metropolitan College (Denver, CO), and Avila University from which she received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in secondary education with a minor in social studies in 1995. While at Avila University, she met her beloved husband, David Heide. Beth and David were united in marriage on July 12, 1997, in Estes Park, Colorado. Her brother, David, was an officiant for their beautiful ceremony. Beth and David are parents to Madison and Rhett. Beth loved spending time with her children and cheering them on in their activities.

In 1995-96, Beth began her well-respected career in education at Center High School in Kansas City, MO, as a student teacher in the history department. This experience brought her so much joy that she pursued and earned her own social studies classroom at Center for the next 10 years.  She served as a volleyball coach from 1998-2002, Political Science Sponsor, Junior Class Sponsor, and was honored by being voted “The Best All Around Teacher” in 2002.

Beth followed her heart by changing her course in education from the classroom to administration, though the classroom and children were always her focus. She earned her Master’s of Science degree in School Leadership from Baker University in 2005. She became the assistant principal at Center in 2006. She served as assistant principal until 2010, when she was hired to lead the school as its principal. While principal, Beth led the staff and students at Center High School to many outstanding achievements; finalist for the National Blue Ribbon School Program in 2012, Missouri Gold Star School of Excellence in 2012, and Newsweek top 100 schools in America in 2014. During the academic year of 2013-14, Beth was honored to be chosen as the Greater KC Principal of the Year. From 2014-2016, Beth served as the Director of Human Resources and Student Services for Center School District. She was inducted into the Center Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

In 2016, Beth was hired as the Executive Director of Secondary Education for the Liberty Public Schools.

She completed her Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Kansas in 2017. Liberty School District then hired her as the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services. She proudly served in this position until just days before her passing.

Beth is survived by her cherished family; husband, David; daughter, Madison, and son, Rhett; brothers, David and Andy; several nieces and nephews; and other loving relatives. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Laurie Marvin, and brother, Richard.

We have only met a few times but I feel I know you each so well from all your mother shared. I first met your mother when I became an Assistant Principal at Center. Our journey continued from there. You have heard from hundreds of people how amazing and special she was to them but I wish to tell you how amazing and special the three of you were to her. To David. You were her rock through the entire journey. There was not a conversation we had during which she did not share your optimism, strength, courage, and unwavering love for her. She stated the only reason she could fight was because you carried her when she could not be strong and she wanted to fight for every day for the three of you. To Madison. She spoke of you with so much pride. I remember when you were little you would sit in her office and read and I would say to her, holy cow she is a mini-you. She would say with certainty that you were much stronger than her and were going to do amazing things. To Rhett. We met again briefly when I visited after her surgery. You are such a polite and welcoming person. I see so much of her in you. She always described you as the most caring and compassionate person she had ever known with a heart of gold. You are your mother’s son. Your mother and I cried quite a bit. I feel like despite her outward optimism when the first Doctor said “three years” one that fateful day that was hard to shake. She hoped, she prayed, she persevered, for each and every day, for you. Her biggest fear of all was that you would not live your best lives after she was gone. Do not let her fears come to fruition. Live your best lives with the love you have for each other and the love of her inside you. Death and grief are overwhelming but her incredible love for you will get you through. Her light is all around you with every memory and the gift of time you had. Grieve, cry, be angry, but love and live your life. continue to make her proud. I will remember and miss your mother each and every day. I will honor her by sending my prayers to each of you for a life well lived to put her fears to rest. Kim

I will forever remember Beth as the person who didn't care what your status in life was. If you were a janitor or principal or a parent she loved everybody equally and appreciated everything that they did. My son loved her as well. I warned her that he was going to be a handful when he got to her school and of course he loved her and never was. so she told me once that she didn't know why I warned her about my son being a handful when he clearly was a good kid I told her was because he loved her and respected her and that's why he did that. anybody that knows my kid knows that's a lot for him because he didn't really care about principles he didn't like being told what to do but she treated him differently and he appreciated that and so do I. I know that it's sad for us that she's gone I don't cry when many people died death is a part of life but I did cry when I heard about her dying even though it is better for her and then she's no longer sick and that's all anybody can really ask for. We will miss her very much I will pray for the family and the friends left behind

Beth was one of the best people I ever met. She always put friends and family first. I knew her from when she was in kindergarten up until she passed. I regret not keeping in touch with her like I did her older brother Andy but we reconnected about 15 years ago and she was the same Beth I remembered. She was driven to be successful for her family. I never met her children Rhett and Madison but she told me about them and just hearing how she talked about her family let me know how deeply she loved them. I will miss Beth and so will this world, for she made this world a brighter and happier place just by her being in it. I wish there was something I could say to comfort her family but they say only time heals and it will probably be this case as well. She will be remembered by all the people she touched during her life and that will keep her memory going forever.

Though I can not physically be with you today for Beth's special homegoing celebration, I have thought and prayed for you often over the past few years and will continue to do so. As the former Principal of Center Middle School from 2004-2019, I share many common experiences, passions, pride and loves with Beth. Although most of these are "Centered" around Center students, faculty, friends and families; without a doubt the thing that stands out the most to me is her passion, pride and love for you-her own family. Beth was passionate about student learning but she was more passionate about you. Beth worked very hard as a leader and in attaining her doctorate. She took great pride in that. But she was more proud of each of you and your accomplishments than her own. Beth loved her students but she loved you more. May God's comfort and Beth's passion, pride and love sustain you so you too will have a life well lived.
