It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Lewis Self on July 15, 2020 at Olathe Hospice House. David was born at Bethany Hospital in 1935 to Lewis and Fern Self. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1953 and was a member of the RF’ers. He joined the Army in 1954 and served four years. He spent three years in Germany as a Military Policeman. Upon returning to Kansas City he used his GI Bill to obtain his teaching degree from the University of Kansas.
He married in 1960 and was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Virgie, for 60 years. They had two children, Dana of Mission, Kansas and John of Las Vegas, Nevada.
David had a long and prestigious career as an educator starting in 1962 as a social studies teacher at Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas.
In 1962 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Kansas. He also earned his Masters of Science in Education in 1969 from the University of Kansas. In 1973 he earned a Specialist in Education from Kansas State College in Pittsburg, Kansas.
From 1968 to 1971, through a government grant, David produced television social studies classes for grade schools in Parsons, Kansas. In 1971 he became Vice Principal at Parsons High School in Parsons, Kansas and in 1972 he became Principal at the Parsons Junior High School. In 1979 he became Principal at Jefferson West High School in Meriden, Kansas. He was Assistant Superintendent of School in Lansing, Kansas in 1985 and retired as Assistant Superintendent of School in Tonganoxie, Kansas in 1992.
David was an easy-going guy who loved to play golf, cards, and like mowing the grass on his riding mower. He also loved his dog Baxter.
Besides his wife and children, he is survived by his four loving nieces, Kathy Growney, Kelly Goins, Debbie Moore and Barbara Engler.
A celebration of life will be held at Tomahawk Hills Golf Club, 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66218 on Friday, July 24, 2020 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, casual attire requested. Overland Park/CDC social distancing recommendations will be observed.
