Gerald H. Vandenberg

October 20, 1936 - January 22, 2021

Gerald H. Vandenberg passed away January 22, 2021, in hospice at Shawnee Gardens Healthcare Center in Shawnee KS.

He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to Henry and Laura Vandenberg, and attended St. Norbert’s College, Marquette University and the University of Kansas, which awarded him a Ph.D. In 1966. He went on to establish a private clinical and forensic psychology practice in the Kansas City area that spanned over 50 years and was highly respected by mental health and legal professionals throughout the region. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology and an American Board of Professional Psychology Diplomate in Forensic Psychology. In addition, he published a book, “Court Testimony in Mental Health,” a guide for attorneys and mental health professionals. Dr. “V” loved his work and took great pride in always adhering to the highest ethical standards.

Gerry also loved his family, his boat, “Asylum,” and the many years of fun he had at the Lake of the Ozarks, following national politics, precious time with friends and his many furry pals over the years.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sue, daughters Linda Vandenberg (Jeff Draeger) of Hood River, Oregon, Julia Vandenberg (Hsun-Hym Chen) of Longmont, Colorado, step-son Patrick Kirby of Nixa, Missouri, his office family, Dr. Harriet Barrish and Jeanne Harmon, whose love and support over the years were beyond measure, many extended family members, friends, patients, clients and colleagues, as well as his devoted golden retrievers, Laney and Nellie.

Gerry’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. John Dunlap, the staff at Menorah Medical Center, Midwest Healthcare Services Shawnee Gardens Healthcare Center and Prairie Wind Hospice for their care and compassion during this past difficult year.  A celebration of his life will be held at a future date, and donations to Canine Companions for Independence are suggested in lieu of flowers, https://www.cci.org/
