Barbara was my mother-in-law for a time in the early 90s. Unlike my mother who passed away in 2024 with my memories of her tainted by her inevitable decline, my memories of Barbara are frozen in time to the early 90s. She was in her upper 50s while I was in my upper 20s. She was a most interesting, albeit a bit eccentric woman. Some memories stand out like her love of buying and selling antique furniture. I recall once going over to her house and seeing the living room filled with furniture. Thanksgiving was most unusual. The bird might go in the oven at noon, 3pm, or even 5pm. Korbel champaign flowed. Her Chow Chow dog was always around. I recall a fall afternoon installing wood shingles on her garage roof while listening to David Craig lead the Chiefs to yet another loss. I don't recall her gardening but I do remember composting! She was an early adopter and taught me how she did things. She was big on that--do her way. Sprinkle on the compost product and then hose It down. I do recall there were a couple of men around who seemed interested in Barbara. Good luck with that! Barbara kept these characters in their own right at arm's length while extracting their assistance with whatever project she was involved in. Always quick to smile, to chuckle, that was Barbara in the 1990s. Rest in peace. I hope your collecting antiques up there.
