Mary Ann Steinmetz

January 18, 1950 - April 3, 2021

Mary Ann Steinmetz was called peacefully to heaven at her home in Overland Park, Kansas on April 3, 2021, at the age of 71.

Mary was born to the late Joseph and Edna Kaufman on January 18, 1950 in Slayton, Minnesota, the youngest of seven children. She was married on July 10, 1970 to her loving husband of over 50 years, and devoted father, Robert Steinmetz. Their two sons, Todd and Casey, and family includes daughter-in-law Angela Steinmetz and 3 beloved grandchildren Blake Robert, Savannah Pearl and Ella Elisabeth. She is succeeded in death by five of her six siblings; brothers Duane Kaufman (Shelbee) and Frank Kaufman (Darlene), and sisters Betty Neisen (Clem), Char Marquette (Kevin), and Janet VanHorn. She is preceded in death by her sister Sharon Kuhnly (Lee).

Mary had some challenging health concerns in recent years. But despite her hurdles, she worked hard…at living. The pure joy of being blessed with an amazing family filled her heart abundantly and kept her striving for the many “good days” when she shared a meal or a phone call with family or a friend.

Throughout Mary’s life she touched the lives of so many people, especially the kids with whom she mentored working for the school district in both Scottsbluff, NE, and in Overland Park, KS for many years. She was also a member of the Mrs. Jaycees, serving as president and in other active roles. Along with serving as den and pack leader for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Mary served in the Lutheran Church with roles in youth leadership and committee chairs as well as choir groups, teaching, and other volunteer efforts.

Mary was a “second mother” to so many people when her boys were growing up. The door was always open, the dining table always ready for one more plate…or maybe two or three. She supported them and their circle of friends with unconditional love as they forged their way in the world. Her generous nature and wonderful, comforting embrace will be missed by all who knew her.

Special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Medical Plaza Internal Medicine who cared for Mary diligently.

The block will not be the same without Mary. She had spunk and a zest for life. She was straightforward and a breath of fresh air. She made my mother laugh and the two of them genuinely cared about each other. She will be greatly missed. Her bravery in the face of illness was an inspiration.

My dearest sister Mary. I miss you and love you so much, but I know in my heart you are in a better place. My heart is very heavy and tears flow easy. I know Rob and family miss you terribly. It has been quite a handful this last year and a half, losing sister Sharon, then David's soulmate of 35 years, Sherrie Anne, who is my Frank's daughter, and now my sweet baby sister. I can always pray and think about the talks, laughter, and recipes.
