Steven Garrett Fancher
Feb 25, 1954 - Jan 02, 2022

Steven Garrett Fancher, 67, passed away January 2, 2022 at the KC Hospice House after a 6 month battle with lung cancer.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 25 from 6-9 pm, on what would have been his 68th birthday at the Meadowbrook Community Center, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, KS 66208.

Steve was born February 25, 1954, in Denver, CO, to William Henry Fancher and Jewell Garrett Johnson. He was a lifetime resident of the Prairie Village and Overland Park area and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1972. Steve was a third-generation employee of Armco Steel and worked for 10 years as a journeyman millwright there.  He was talented beyond belief in all facets of construction and his lifetime career was being a contractor and owning Johnson County Specialists Remodeling. His beginnings in the steel industry influenced his craftsmanship, and many clients are still enjoying his creations today.

He loved going fast, and hearing the rumble of an engine, whether it was in his big work trucks or on a motorcycle. In his younger years, he loved water skiing at the Lake of the Ozarks and later at Lake Winnebago. He was a natural athlete and could barefoot and slalom ski and excelled at most sports. He loved to dance, and at one point owned and operated Uptown Down and Dirty, a dance club and bar in Mission, KS.

He was married on August 6, 1983, to Connie, his wife of 33 years, and after their divorce still his best friend. They have two daughters, Kathryn (Katy) and Christina (Tina) who became the center of their lives together. He was an incredibly involved and dedicated father. He was a Girl Scout leader, a rappel master, Sunday school teacher, and an unofficial school mascot, “Tommy Hawk.” He crafted a school carnival, several years of haunted houses, coached softball, basketball, and soccer, and was the architect of many school projects and epic birthday parties. He was always ready to lend a hand and always had a Gerber tool on his hip to facilitate.

Steve was a loving father, devoted Papa, and faithful friend. He will always be remembered by his ex-wife, Connie Fancher, his daughters, Kathryn Boehm and husband Brad, Christina Mladenoff and husband Chip, grandchildren George and Evan III, his mother, Jinx Johnson, brother, Scott Fancher and wife Gail, half-brother, Jamie Fancher and wife Anne, half-sister, Sarah Tracy and husband Mike, step-sister, Debbie Miller and husband Marvin, step-father, Norm Johnson whom he loved and respected and wife Madonna, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Fancher, and recently by his step-mother, Louise Fancher.

So perfectly written! An architect of many events. He was never on the sidelines. Always up in it. With loads of enthusiasm! So much love to you all during this time, and time to come. Prayers for a whole new meaning of relationship with a cancer free Steve on the other side 🙏

We are so saddened about Steve’s passing. He was a great neighbor and always willing to help out when we had a problem, especially when it involved any remodeling. He always had an interesting outlook on life. We’ll miss him!

I am so sorry to learn about Steve’s passing this year. We were good friends in our youth. We had a great time playing on a basketball team in junior high, that Norm Johnson coached. Being a contractor myself, I would see him at various places. We would talk about the fun we had together and also talk about the remodeling business.Steve was one of the nicest guys I have known in my life. I am so sorry that he is gone. Jim
