Glen Alan Duderstadt

Glen Alan Duderstadt, 67, Overland Park, Kan., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, after battling a long illness. He was born on March 25, 1955, in Kansas City, Kan., to Charles and Opal Duderstadt. Glen was the proud older brother to Wayne and Linda.

He shared 32 years of marriage to his amazing wife, Hilary Houghton Duderstadt. Throughout his many successes and his challenges, he was beyond thankful to have Hilary by his side. They had one son, Christopher, with whom he shared many of his passions, especially his love for sports.

Anyone who knew Glen quickly figured out that family, faith and sports meant the world to him. The last sporting event he watched was the Kansas men’s basketball team’s comeback victory over North Carolina in the national title game. There’s no doubt he was overjoyed in the heavens to then see his Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals win the first two games of the MLB season the day after he passed.

After graduating from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1973, he quickly immersed himself into the campus life of Ottawa University. He thoroughly enjoyed broadcasting OU sporting events, being active within the University’s music department, and growing his faith while attending OU. Glen earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications within the Church in 1977. He later became a graduate of the United Methodist Course of Study, an accreditation program for local church pastors.

Upon graduating from OU, Glen was named the sports director of Ottawa’s radio station, KOFO. Along with flourishing as the voice of Ottawa High Cyclones, OU Braves and other area sports teams, he had the pleasure of giving live pre-game reports from Royals Stadium during the Royals’ glory years of the 1970s and 1980s. Remaining in Ottawa after graduation proved to be his biggest blessing, as he ended up meeting Hilary during the spring of her senior year at OU.

Glen married Hilary on August 19, 1989, with hundreds of friends and family members on hand. They went on to call Overland Park, Kan., home and welcomed Christopher to the world on May 22, 1991. After settling in the Kansas City area, Glen spent a good portion of his career working in various customer service roles, including at FedEx from 1997-2013.

However, it was just three years into his tenure at FedEx that he really found his true calling. In 2000, he became a pastor in the United Methodist Church. Over the next 19 years, he became quite familiar with 69 highway, as he traveled to southeastern Kansas to serve congregations in Devon, Mapleton, Arma, Pittsburg, New Lancaster and La Cygne.

Whether it was at church, a ballgame or meal, Glen’s greatest joy was spending time with Hilary, Christopher and the rest of his family. He was preceded in death by his father. Glen is survived by Hilary, Christopher, Opal, Wayne (Cathy), Linda (Kelly), his nephew, Eric (Heidi); his niece, Stacey (Brandon Brown); his great niece, Grace; father-in-law, George Houghton; brother-in-law, Trevor Houghton (Beth); two aunts, two uncles, and several cousins.

Glen, Hilary and Christopher have been and will continue to be thankful for the support of friends, family and medical professionals, especially those at MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital, Davita Nall Dialysis Center and the AdventHealth Wound Care Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Asbury United Methodist Church (online: https://app.easytithe.com/App/Giving/visitasbury; mail: 5400 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208) or Ottawa University (online: www.ottawa.edu; mail 1001 S. Cedar St., Ottawa, KS 66067). Glen’s Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Asbury UMC. The visitation will precede the Celebration of Life, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Asbury’s welcome center. It will continue after the service with a light supper in the fellowship hall. I was a member of Pastor Glen's congregation in LaCygne Ks. I enjoyed him as our pastor. We would talk KU basketball quite often since I was an alumni. So sorry for your loss but I know he is with his master.

To Hillary and Christopher, I was so sorry to hear about Glen's passing. Glen was two years ahead of me at Ottawa and was the RD for my dorm my first two years. He & I shared a passion for baseball, but on different sides. He was a rabid Royals fan and I was a hard-core Yankee fan! We had many spirited debates, as you can imagine, as that was they hey-day of the Yankees-Royals rivalry. I did many radio broadcasts over the years with Glen, mostly OU football and basketball games. Glen was a great mentor to me on the art of broadcasting, and when he was at KOFO he would often ask me to do games with him. He also got us press passes occasionally that got us into the press box at Royals Stadium and in the locker room after games. I have many memories of getting to interview major league players, which was quite a thrill for a young college kid. But one of the highlights of my sports life occurred in the fall of 1978 when Glen raised enough advertising money for the Royals-Yankees playoffs that he could go to New York to cover the playoffs - and he invited me along! It was a fantastic experience. We flew to New York, went to all the pre-game stuff (press conferences and pre-game food for the media - unbelievable spread of anything in the world you could imagine to eat!) Got seats right behind home plate because the press box was full. Got to go in the post-game interview room with the star players from both teams. And I even talked Glen into going on the field at Yankee Stadium before one of the games. He was very hesitant because our press passes were second tier, but I said "What's the worst that happens - they tell us to get off the field?" We walked out on the field and were standing a few feet away from Reggie Jackson getting interviewed by Joe Gariagiola, with all the other stars from both teams milling around on the field. Sure enough, after a few minutes a security guy came up to us and told us we had to get off the field. But in retrospect, Glen was glad that we had gotten to step on the field at such a big event. The whole experience was a thrill of a lifetime - I've told that story to so many people over the years and I have Glen to thank for it. Even though I was a fan of the hated Yankees, he knew how much it would mean to me to go with him, and I feel so blessed that he gave me that opportunity. His birthday was the day before mine, and we got to celebrate it together on choir tour my sophomore year at, of all places, the Schlitz brewery in Milwaukee. :) Glen was a good friend and an outstanding person, and I am really sorry for your loss. I'm sure you already know this, but he meant a lot to so many people, including me. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Chris Blythe

To Glen's Family: Thoughts and prayers your way. Glen was a great individual. Patient, freely giving of his time and always willing to have a conversation. He always had a way of saying the right thing at time when I needed to hear it. Rest in Peace.

One's life encounters many individuals. Some are able to break barriers and help you find a better part for yourself. He was a good person who brought out the best of all that touch life. Many blessings to his family and friends. With regards.

Hilary: much sadness to hear of Glen's passing. I have thought about you every day and so sorry we haven't been able to keep up with not working in the office. I have truly admired your dedication to Glen and support of him through all his illnesses. Take care and if there is anything I can do to support you please let me know.

Glen was a good friend during our college years. He knew me as Kathy Stultz and I knew him as Dude. I cannot recall when I first heard someone call him Glen (Wayne may be the one who broke that news). Dude introduced me to the bewildering concept of fantasy sport. And dispute my incredulous disinterest, he became/remained a kind and loyal friend. As happens, we lost track of each other as the years passed. I am so glad to hear of his marriage, family and life work. It brought back many good memories of our friendship. My condolences to all of you.

Sure sorry to hear of Glen's passing. I Really enjoyed his friendship and Sports Ethics as we worked at KOFO many years ago. Glen always had a good witt and was willing to use it often. He delivered the sports picture well for our listening Communities in Northeast Kansas. Often times I would take over the "board" from Glen,..he was always ready to relay any station changes to me on my shift. What a Pro!. May you Rest In Peace, My Friend.
