Laura Anne Ritchie

March 28, 1946 - May 23, 2022

Laura Anne Ritchie, 76, died at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Kansas City on May 23, 2022 of complications from COVID-19 and the flu. Anne was born on March 28, 1946 in Wichita, KS, to Proctor and Vivian Ritchie. After competing in the Olympic tryouts for swimming, she graduated from Wichita East High. She studied at both Colorado Women’s College and the University of Kansas, where she pledged Pi Beta Phi. Anne loved working as a TWA flight attendant, a shop girl at Trapp’s Florist, refurbishing houses, and as a saleswoman at Halls. Her most important achievement was raising three beautiful daughters, whom she cherished. An exemplary cook, she also enjoyed gardening, antiquing, backgammon, bingo, and watching Wheel of Fortune. Anne was a fun-loving, feisty lady who inherited her father’s superb sense of humor. She is survived by her daughters, Ritchie Patterson, Devon Sween, Laura Bettis and Eric; grandchildren, Darby Sween, Annie Sween, Elyse Sween, Packson Bettis, and Lauren Bettis; grand-dogs Buddy Bear, Louie, Ruby, Toro; and her grand-kitty, Mr. Friendly. The family would like to honor her cherished caregivers and palliative care team: Chris, Grace, Jessica, Debbie, Ali, Dr. Roberts, Amanda and crew, Kaitlyn, and Paula R. Without their spectacular care, Anne’s last few years would have been far less enjoyable. Anne was well loved and will continue to live in our hearts and minds. As she liked to say in parting, “HI – HO!”

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Rainbows United - 3223 N. Oliver, Wichita, KS. 67220; Wayside Waifs - 3901 Martha Truman Rd, Kansas City, MO 64137; and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church - 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64113.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Monday, June 6, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace. A reception at St. Andrew’s will follow.

An endearing memory of Anne is when she successfully tried out for Wichita East High, '63-'64 / senior-year cheerleader. After her impressive dance-cheer routine, she lost track of where to find the curtain opening -- to allow her to exit the 250+ person auditorium stage. For a few frustrating moments, she pushed at the heavy curtain in vain -- to find her exit route. At last, she found her way behind the huge, heavy curtains, & everyone cheered for her. They must have voted for her, too, because she served as both a sophomore-year & a senior-year cheerleader. Mostly I remember her as a genuinely kind & fully present soul.

Good long time fruend ,Sedona ,Arizona

I first met Anne when I worked at Trapp’s Flowers. We had so much fun there and continued to be good friends in the many years I lived in KC. We were Loose Park walking buddies and most every Saturday we would go early to the KC Farmers Market. I always was jealous of Anne’s tiny figure, especially because she always had a big appetite. She could power down a huge Italian breakfast at the Market. I will miss her and her generous heart and laugh! God bless her and her family. With wonderful memories, Annemarie Hunter

Annie Ritch and I went to Kindergarten (me) and 1st grade (Anne) at the old Mt. Carmel Catholic School on the west side of Wichita. She was living with us while her folks were in Minnesota at the Sister Kenny Hospital where her father received treatment for polio. I wore her hand-me-downs during my childhood. I loved her like a sister and, even though I know that it was time for her to go, I will really miss her. Even as her heath declined, she was always friendly and popular with her neighbors, her doctors, caregivers and the staff at Chicos. She had terrific style in decorating and her houses all reflected that. She loved to shop! She loved her daughters and their children. She loved and was loved and we will meet again. This I believe. Hi Ho, Annie Ritch.

Anne was a beautiful fighter. She was , intelligent, feisty, and unforgettable. When she entered a room it was full and she read in charge. She didn’t hesitate to tell you as she told me one day when I asked her what she thought she said “I think you are a nut!” We always had fun and laughed and time flew by quickly everyone we were together. She is a beautiful person who I am privileged to have known. Her daughters shine her reflection and love. I am sad that she had left us but glad that she does not have to contend with “Henry” her oxygen tank that was already getting tangled around her. We tried to come up with a more suitable nuance type of name for her pesky tank that would seem too crass for Anne always had an audit of glass when she visited. I’m so blessed to have a spent some of her last moments here on earth with her. She is missed terribly.

Anne, who we called Annie Ritch, married my best friend Curt Patterson. We spent many years with them filled with good times, summer vacations at her family place in Bay Lake MN, and lots of parties with friends. She was vivacious, funny, outgoing, great laugh but best of all she has left behind three wonderful daughters Ritchie, Devon and Laura. That is the best thing a parent can do.

Our large high school class (Wichita East, 1964) was made up of some pretty wonderful people. The fabric we wove was bright and energetic, much like the colors and patterns we see in bright Southwestern rugs and blankets I see. The threads ended too soon throughout these past 58 years for many. Now, Anne. The fabric would have never been the same without Anne. She jumped and cheered as our teams in every sport took high honors. Thank you, Ann for your never ceasing smile and energy. You were a shining bright thread within our fabric.

I will always have fond memories of Annie Ritch. I was in her wedding as a bridesmaid and even wore her wedding dress in my own wedding. My mother was frugal! When joe and I were first married we lived near Anne and Curt and she fed us every weekend. She was an excellent cook and a beautiful hostess. She loved family above all and we were blessed to be part of hers during those special years. Her smile and sense of style will always remain with me. Rest In Peace Anne. No more suffering now❤️❤️

Goodbye my friend. As our friends fade away, we remember the joy of friendship and the humility of comparison--in Annie's case, there were joyful moments in her home, at the Ritchie sandpit, and on the sophomore cheer squad. The admiring comparisons were to her athleticism and beauty, inside and out. I wish I had stayed closer to you, dear Annie. I loved seeing your grandies, who clearly loved you, at the beautiful service. Fare thee well.

Anne was not only my cousin, but one of my best friends thru out our school years and college. Although we were separated by miles she was always in my heart. You will be missed my dear friend. Rest in piece.

Dear Laura, Devon and Ritchie ~ I knew your Mom growing up in Wichita with summers spent at the Wichita Country Club. She was an incredible swimmer! Our paths crossed here in Kansas City when I bought your home on High Drive, and lived there with Christy and Jeff, and you all moved just across the street! I remember you very fondly. Then, Ann and I would run into each other occasionally at Halls where she was a contingent and I was Special Events Manager. She was always friendly and energetic, with such a variety of interests. And I always felt that you all were so important to her. I know she will be missed. Warmly, Cathy
