Obituaries detail

Rev. Richard "Dick" L. Morris, Age: 77
Dec 19, 1944 - Jun 07, 2022

Rev. Richard L. Morris (Dick) 77, passed away June 7, 2022 at Kansas City Hospice House. He was born in Wichita, KS to E. Pauline and V. Vern Morris on December 19, 1944. His passion was music. He would often sing “Simple Song” from Leonard Bernstein’s MASS. Many of Dick’s hospice clients were often treated to a song or two. He loved his grandchildren Trinity and Caleb and took pride in watching them grow and flourish. He was proud of the people his children had become. His daughter, Vicki, is a teacher in Kansas City, KS and his son Chris is an Engineering Technician at Burns and MacDonald.

Dick was a parish pastor for 25 years in St. Joseph, MO; Carlsbad, NM; Las Animas, CO; Nebraska City, NE; and Lawson, MO. After retiring from The Presbyterian Church, USA, he found his calling for chaplaincy with hospice. He felt this was what God called him to do.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue; his 2 children Vicki Morris and Chris Morris; his 2 grandchildren Trinity Morris and Caleb Morris all of Lenexa, KS; 2 brothers Jon (Jan) Morris of Shalimar, FL and Micheal (Margie) Morris of Overland Park, KS; and a loving extended family including his loving family at Kansas City Hospice.

To us he was “dad”, “papa”, and a loving husband. Thank you to all who worked with Dick. You reminded us he was so much more. He was a friend, a confidant, a pastor, and a kinsman redeemer.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, Jun 10, 2022 at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS at 10 am officiated by Rev. Sally Wright.

I got to know Dick through a Bible study group at Village Church. He was committed to his faith and had great insight on the Bible. He also brought a deep awareness of other people and their faith journeys that helped us better understand our own struggles. His health declined so fast that I never had a chance to say good bye. Good bye Dick. You are missed. I hope your pain is over and your peace is complete.

It was an honor to work with Dick the last few years of his life. I will miss his sweet spirit. He touched so many lives with calm and songs. A special gift to all.

I know how hard it is to lose someone you love. It’s hard to see them go but in someways I t’s hard to see them suffer. As Christians we can see God‘s hand in their passing and have the knowledge that we will see them again when we all join the Lord. Dwain and I were just talking at Christmas about our wedding on December 16, that Dick sang for. We both said that it held special memories for us. They are both in God’s choir now! Prayers have helped me through this time as well as friends and family. I know those things will be your support. 🙏 Love Bonnie

Judy Roll called me early this evening to tell me about Dick. We are unable to attend the service, as our week is full. I did share this news on our First Pres KCK Facebook page just now. It is probably too late for many to respond, but I told them where the obituary could be found. I'm thinking we saw you both last at Paul Thomas's memorial service in January. Thinking of you and sending our sympathy and hugs to you and your family, Sue.

Dick will always be remembered an missed he was such a blessing to me an my mother violet. He would come into home an his gifts God gave him glowed and shined the minute he walked in. He always greeted us with a big smile an asked how we were doing was there anything he could do for us that day.we would visit a few minutes then he would say I'm going to sing some songs an pray for violet. Mom always enjoyed his singing you could tell it brought her comfort an peace.Allthough she could not communicate much she would look up at dick an say oh I like that he would say to me did you here that I would tell him I sure did your voice is truly comforting and a blessing.Dick you will forever be missed an we were truly blessed that God sent you us to get to know you in our time of need thank you

Dick performed our marriage ceremony in 1989 in Las Animas, CO. He, Sue, Vicki and Chris were true friends to my future wife when she was struggling as a single mom. Dick also helped us thru some rough periods with great success--we've now been married for nearly 33 years. He has now received his just reward as he will dwell in the house of the Lord for evermore. Blessings to the family and may your many precious memories sustain you in this most difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to Sue and family. I worked with Dick for many years in hospice and he was a gift to the patients and families. Peace be with you.

Sue & family--- I was genuinely saddened to learn of Dick's death. I appreciated serving with him when we were both in Homestead presbytery in Nebraska, as we served there on COM at the same time. In recent years I came to realize how he was truly committed to hospice ministry. He and I have also been serving the Rantoul congregation, he much longer than I. He has been such a gift to that congregation, and so deeply appreciated by them. My prayer is that God's sustaining Grace will be very much with you in these weeks and months of adjustment as you move into life without Dick's physical presence by your side.

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. We shared great times at 1st Pres in high school and choir. Our trip to Mexico in '67 was a special time.
