James Richard Matthews of Independence, MO died on September 9, 2022.  He was born in San Francisco, CA on August 26, 1938.  He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years--Peggy Matthews, his daughter Kelly Matthews, his brother Don (and Pat) Matthews, his stepdaughters Kim (and Doug) Hawley and Jill (and Brett) Gordon, and his grandchildren Isabella Matthews, Ethan Matthews-David, Claire (and Jake) Hawley, Brian Gordon, Faith (and Patrick) Hawley and Matthew (and Samantha) Gordon.  Also surviving are many nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Eula Matthews and by his sister Bev Shepherd.

Jim grew up in Kansas City.  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1960, and in the Navy Reserves through 1964.  He worked for many years at Western Auto and Allis Chalmers, but he enjoyed his work most as a truck driver at J.B. Hunt for many years.

At home, Jim enjoyed his time with family and his many dogs and cats.  For relaxation, he loved to go boating and camping at various lakes throughout the area.  After he retired, he especially enjoyed his travels with Peggy to various places throughout the United States and abroad.  Jim had a distinctive laugh, smile and sparkle of happiness that he shared with family and friends; they will all miss him dearly.

Coworker and friend ,Buckner ,Missouri

Loved Jimbo like a brother, I will always remember him for his great smile and belly laughing. I don't need to tell those who knew him, how much fun it was to be around him, he never failed to make the lives of others better through laughter! I'm feeling quilty for not calling on Jim and his wonderful wife Peggy when I could.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Even as a little girl I remember his laugh. My prayers and thoughts to all in the family who will miss him so much. I know he will be at peace and reunited with so many loved ones.

Although I didn't see him often, when he was out in the yard, we enjoyed exchanging pleasantries. He was always cheerful, with a big smile, and quick laugh. The neighborhood has lost a great guy and we will miss him. Blessings and best wishes to Peggy
