Donald Wayne Lightfoot, Sr.

April 12, 1942-November 13, 2022

Donald “Don” Wayne Lightfoot, Sr., age 80, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family in Basehor, KS on the morning of November 13, 2022.  Don was born on April 12, 1942, to Clifford and Lorene Odle Lightfoot in Kansas City, KS.  He attended Hawthorne School and Northwest Junior High School before attending Wyandotte High School.  While in high school, Don excelled as an athlete.  He played football, was on the diving team, and had the extraordinary accomplishment of being a Golden Gloves Champion Boxer before graduating in 1961.  He met the love of his life, Georgia May Shoemake, while at Wyandotte High and married his high school sweetheart December 29, 1961.  He shortly thereafter began his 32 year career at BPU, retiring in 1997 as a maintenance supervisor.  Documents and plans that he authored while head of the Nearman Plant remain at BPU today.  While raising their three sons, Don was an avid coach of their athletics and a role model for his sons and their friends.  Don continued to exhibit his love of sports as an enthusiastic spectator at countless games of his grandchildren.  He adopted golf in his retirement years and played daily at sunrise during the golf season.   He proudly golfed his age at 76. He became an award-winning artist as well, passionately teaching his grandchildren his talents and creating the most impressive Halloween pumpkins for his grandkids that were admired by so many.   Don was a man of great faith in the Lord and trusted God’s will; that faith gave him comfort and carried him through his short battle with Stage 4 brain cancer.  He was an active and cherished member of Bonner Springs Church of the Nazarene.  Don is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Lorene Lightfoot.   He is survived by his wife, Georgia Lightfoot, of the home; his sons, Don Jr. (Katie) of Olathe, KS, Tim of Kansas City, KS, and Brad (Kelly) of Kansas City, KS; his grandchildren, Ashley, Cameron, Cody, Tanner, Georgia, Ella, Danielle, and Garrett; his brother, Larry (Mona) of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and close friends. Don was a remarkable man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand.  He was a doting husband, a tremendous father, a proud PaPa, a loyal friend, and a servant of God.  We will see him in every breathtaking sunrise.  A Visitation will be held at Bonner Springs Church of the Nazarene, 742 N. Nettleton Ave, Bonner Springs, KS 66012 on Saturday, November 19th, 2022 from 9:30am-11am followed immediately by a Church Service and Luncheon at the Church.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Bonner Springs Church of the Nazarene or KC Hospice.
