Janet Batterby died peacefully on November 13, 2022. She was 89-years-old. Born Janet Lee Lord in Leavenworth, Kansas on June 21, 1933, she was the youngest of eight children. Janet is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert (Bob) Batterby. The couple lived in Prairie Village, Kansas for the past 22 years.

Janet graduated from St. Luke’s Nursing College in Kansas City in 1953. She enjoyed a long and varied career in nursing. In 1970, Janet married Bob Batterby, a career naval officer. The family moved to Monterey, California where Janet pursued her private pilot’s license- a lifelong ambition. As with nursing, Janet enjoyed many years of flying in varied terrain and was a lifetime member of the 99’s- a female pilot’s association. While living in Kansas City, Janet was also an active member of the DAR.

Janet had three daughters from her first marriage to Dr. Murray Meador, a graduate of KU Medical School. Janet’s eldest daughter, Marsh LoScalzo- also of Prairie Village, died in 2019. Janet is survived by Blair Sutfin of Denver, Colorado and Chrys Meador of Santa Fe, New Mexico- both graduates of the University of Kansas. Janet is grandmother to four grandsons (including Nicholas LoScalzo residing in Olathe, Kansas), one grand-daughter, and two great-grandchildren.

Janet had a passion for travel which she shared with her daughters logging many miles both at home and abroad. She was also an avid reader and student of history. Books gave Janet many hours of joy in her long and fruitful life. Janet and Bob have attended St. Michael and All Angels in Mission, Kansas for many years.  A service to celebrate Janet’s life will be held at St. Michael’s on December 5, 2022 at 1 p.m., Saint Michael and All Angel’s, 6630 Nall Avenue, Mission, KS. 66202. www.stmaa.com
