Dawn Denise Patricia Cochrane, Age: 61
Feb 19, 1962 - Dec 14, 2023

Ms. Dawn Denise Patricia Cochrane, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend transitioned peacefully on Thursday, December 14th, 2023, with her loving family by her side.

Dawn was born in Saint John’s Antigua on February 19, 1962, to Eustace and June Cochrane. She was raised in a Christian household and attended Princess Margaret Secondary School. She was an excellent student, was very sociable, and had many admirers and friends. At age 16, she departed from her home country to the United States to study Nursing, becoming the first sibling in her family to attend college.

Dawn was passionate about her entrepreneurial ventures, especially catering. One such venture resulted in the founding of La Carib Catering during the 1990s, and the opening of the Caribbean Cuisine restaurant in downtown Topeka during the early 2000s. She most recently found success with producing homemade seasonings under her Wadadli Queen Spice Blend and Herbs brand. She also operated Antigua 365 Beaches; a travel agency designed to bring travelers to her home country. Through these endeavors, Dawn made it clear that she wanted to share her love for Antigua and the Caribbean to all comers. To this end, one of her proudest achievements came in 2021, when she worked with Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri to sign a proclamation establishing the month of June as Caribbean American Heritage Month.

Additionally, Dawn was involved with numerous local, community, and school groups, and held a great interest in engaging with youth to help them develop into community leaders and realize their potential. She was an avid believer in Christ and active church member in every community that she lived in. Most recently, she attended the First Baptist Church of KCMO, where she volunteered her talents and served as the hospitality event coordinator. She served as a chairperson for the NAACP ACT-SO Achievement Program. She was a track and field parent liaison and assisted with the Black Student Union organization at Topeka West High School. She was a campaign volunteer for the 2016 election. She was also active with national and local organizations, such as the Smile Foundation and TARC. She was a strong advocate for other black entrepreneurs, especially women.

Dawn is survived by her children Simone, LaToya, Nicole, Richelle, Britanny, Ryan (Rebecca), Randall, Rianna, and Rajoun. Her 12 grandchildren Ariunna, Ahriyon, Aidyn, Ava, Avery, Kamai, Aubrey, Ahriyes, Ahriyk, Ahriyn, Kaia and Quin. She is also survived by her 9 siblings, cousins, and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Eustace Cochrane Sr., and mother, Launa Cochrane Belle.

Dawn will be remembered for her passion, drive, and willingness to help any and everybody.

Funeral services for Dawn will be held at First Baptist Church of KCMO on Thursday, December 28th at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, her family humbly asks for donations to one of these organizations:

So saddened to hear of Dawn’s passing. I met Dawn through her wonderful daughter Nicole at Topeka west. After my mother passed Dawn really embraced me into a family and I felt so loved , cared for by her. She also got me addicted to delicious Caribbean cuisine and never made me have to pay for food( didn’t even have the money) . Although I haven’t seen her in a while I will never forget how she made me feel. Journey well Dawn. May her family be comforted by precious memories of her. All is well.

It was a sad day when I learned of Dawn,s passing. At that moment I reflected on her cheerful smile, and the drive to accomplish so much that she was working on. From childhood to most recently, when we re-connected in Antigua each moment, our telephone conversations will continue to be cherished. Sleep in peace, my dear, you will be missed and remembered. Heaven has gained an angel.

I love my sister dawn. I would have loved to have spent more time with her and bonding with her children but God had a different plan for her. I certainly will miss her. Our lives hinged over the past few years and we've been engaging in enterprising and heartfelt conversations sporadically but it was heartwarming. On behalf of my wife and children.I pray that the God of all comfort will comfort the family at this time of loss. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and Lean not to your understanding in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.
