Frances Alberta Jarchow, Age: 94

Frances Alberta Jarchow, 94, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on June 28, 2024.  Frances, or “Frankie” as known to her friends, was born March 10, 1930, and raised in Independence, Missouri.  She attended The University of Kansas where she met her husband, Gordon Jarchow.  They were married for 60 years.

 

 

Frances was very outgoing, sociable, likeable and strong-willed.  She was personable and always very caring toward others.  Throughout her life, she devoted herself to numerous volunteer activities.  While raising her family in Ruskin Heights, Missouri, and then Prairie Village, Kansas, she was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and PTA board member.  She was involved with the League of Women Voters, a member of the Johnson County Transportation Council, Chairman of the Social and Rehabilitation Services, Chairman of the Voluntary Advisory Community board for Johnson County and a volunteer for many other organizations.  One of her biggest honors was being chosen “Volunteer of the Year” for Johnson County, Kansas.

 

 

In 1991, Frances and her husband, Gordon, moved to Grand Marais, Minnesota, when Gordon retired.  Frances continued her volunteer activities.  She was a volunteer/leader of the Garden Club, on the Public Health and Human Services Advisory Board, Active Living Steering Committee, Highway 61 Steering Committee and other organizations.  She was instrumental in the process of forming the Cook County Tennis Association.  When Frances was 88 years old, Grand Marais presented her with the 2018 Citizen of the Year award for her volunteer efforts in the community.

 

 

Frances enjoyed camping, canoeing, bicycling, tennis, cross-country skiing, hiking, gardening and playing Bridge.  She learned to play Pickleball in her 80’s.  She traveled with Gordon to numerous countries.

 

 

After living in Grand Marais, Minnesota, for 30 years, Frances moved back to Overland Park, Kansas, in 2021 to be close to family.

 

 

She is preceded in death by her husband Gordon Jarchow and parents Carlyle and Frances Barnhardt.

 

 

Frances is survived by son David (Carole) Jarchow, Phoenix, Arizona; son Peter (Janice) Jarchow, Shawnee, Kansas; daughter Jennifer (Charles) Luchen, Overland Park, Kansas; her grandchildren Timothy Jarchow, Zachary (Sarah) Jarchow, Michael (Gina) Luchen, Brad Luchen, Tegan (Robert King) Jarchow and her great-grandchildren Vasilis Luchen and Marilena Luchen.  She is also survived by her sister, Beverly Radford, Parkville, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.

 

 

There will be no formal services.
