Victor Albert Viard, Age: 95

Victor Albert Viard, 95, of Stilwell, Kansas, died on August 28, 2024, at Sharon Lane Health and Rehabilitation in Shawnee Mission, surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Merriam, Kansas on March 20, 1929, he was the eldest of five children of farmers Victor and Louise (Antoine) Viard. After graduation from Shawnee Mission North High School and service in the army in the Korean War, he returned home to assist his widowed mother in operating the family farm. Upon his marriage to Irene Dobbels in 1959, he purchased his own farm in Stilwell, where he grew herbs and vegetables and operated a plant nursery into his 88th year.

His long and happy old age would not have been possible without the kindness of many people, including Braden, Crystal, Harota, Lynne, Laura, Rahel, Stacy, and Zet, as well as countless agency caregivers who assisted him under often difficult circumstances.

He is survived by sons Alan of Bethesda, Maryland; Brian (Ruby) of Hong Kong; and Craig of the home; and family friends Dana and Mary whose devotion and daily attention lengthened his life and filled his final years with companionship and love. He also leaves behind several other long-standing friends: Dave, who helped him weekly at the Kansas City Market and joined him in innumerable pitch games over their long friendship; Barbara and Gene, who shared many meals with him; Naomi and Steve, who visited weekly in his later years; Karen and Garry, who shared his love of gardening; and Sidney and Ron, whose practical assistance helped him to remain in his home until months before his death.

There will be no funeral or service. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Please contact the family at vavmemorial@gmail.com for details.

It was my privilege to get to know Vic this past year and I was blessed to get to meet his boys and see their faithful love and care for their Dad. Although I was on the night shift and didn’t get to interact with Vic throughout the day, I heard him tell of his busy farmer’s markets and love for the outdoors and farming. I do have to say (with a chuckle) that I will never hear Johnny Cash sing again without thinking of Vic! I will never forget the morning when, after 5 or 6 hours of Johnny Cash singing us to sleep, we turned on the news and heard that a hospital down South had had two babies born the previous day (whose parents didn’t know each other) that were given the names “Johnny Cash” and “June Carter”! God bless Vic’s friends and family who will be missing him so much.🙏🙏🙏

A good life, well lived-purposeful, productive, fruitful, crowned by a good death-peaceful and surrounded by many of those who mattered most to him. He liked good food and had a sweet tooth. He much appreciated our English fruit cake and I hope that wherever he is now at rest there will be an unlimited supply!

Mr. Viard was very much respected and loved by the Howard family and the Stilwell community. Brian and Craig were some of my most influential friends in school and were a blessing to me. Sorry for your loss. We will see him in heaven.

My deepest sympathy for Alan, Brian , and Craig...I really enjoyed buying plants from your dad and getting an education on them for free! I still have many plants that I purchased from him over the years!
