Roy Lidster Holman, Jr., Age: 93

Roy Lidster Holman, Jr., passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, in Overland Park, KS, holding hands with the love of his life, Joan.

Born in Oakland, CA, on January 7, 1931 to Roy Lidster Holman, Sr. and Edna Belle Cobbledick, Roy grew up in Oakland on a chicken ranch on Lincoln Avenue and graduated from Fremont High School. Not long after starting college at San Jose State University, he was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and sent “overseas”—from Oakland to San Francisco to guard the California coast north of the city. When his service ended, he completed his Bachelor’s degree from San Jose State. After a career as a firefighter with the Oakland Fire Department, Roy retired at the age of 55 and spent the next 38 years doing what he always said he was born to do: being retired. Never idle, he filled his days helping his neighbors, travelling, gardening, updating their home, tinkering with motorcycles and cars, repairing clocks, and many other things, which included being a great husband and father.

Roy married the woman of his dreams, Registered Nurse Joan Theresa Pulvermacher, on September 23, 1961, in Oakland, and they had three children. Roy and Joan lived in their beautiful home on Everett Avenue in Oakland that they purchased as newlyweds in 1962 until relocating to Kansas to live near their son in 2021.  Roy always referred to himself a “Lucky Guy,” but his family and those whom he helped cannot help but feel that they are the lucky ones.  He could fix almost anything, had a wonderful sense of humor, and the only thing he loved more than ice cream was his family.

Roy is survived by his beloved wife Joan; his son Christopher Holman (May) of Leawood, KS; his daughter Anne Holman of Casper, WY; and his daughter Patricia Holman (Peter) of Oakland, CA; his grandson Stephen Roy Holman;  granddaughters Kelly Anne Murphy and Holly Li-Ya Holman; his brother Edward Holman, Sr.; and many nephews and nieces.

I remember Roy helping me in with my car (a used and abused 1970s Honda Civic CVCC with manual choke) in HS and college when I didn't have money for a mechanic or mechanically inclined family member to help. He taught me to drive a clutch after my own dad nearly had a heart attack trying to teach me. He was a wonderful cook and always had an open door and something for my kids to play with. He was the best husband, dad and friend anyone could wish for. I will miss him.

Chapter 107 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors appreciated Roy’s many years of service to 107. We were so grateful and appreciated his generous donation of beautiful clocks and tools when he moved to Kansas. May he rest in eternal peace. His family is in our thoughts at this difficult time.
