Charles H. “Bill” Bilyew
Aug 02, 1938 - Oct 11, 2024

Charles “Bill” Bilyew, age 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024. Born on August 2, 1938, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, he was the youngest of seven children of William Burge Bilyew and Caroline Turner Bilyew. Growing up on the family farm, he learned the value of hard work and resilience, traits that would carry him through a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy.

At just 17, Bill enlisted in the Navy with a commitment to service, and a passion for travel and adventure. His service spanned 23 years, from 1955 to 1978, during which he achieved the highest rank for an enlisted man—Master Chief Petty Officer. He served in the elite nuclear submarine navy during the Cold War, a period of intense global tension, where his dedication and leadership were pivotal to the success of his missions.  During his service, he was awarded five Good Conduct Awards, the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

After retiring from the Navy, he returned to Kansas, where he settled in Overland Park with his sister, Louise Young. Together, they co-founded a home repair business initially called “No Job Is Too Small” and later B&L Services.  Word of mouth generated a thriving business which they operated for 20 years. Known for their dependability, range of skills (“Bill could do anything!”), almost round the clock service, and no job too small attitude, B&L Services became a cornerstone of support to residents in and well beyond Overland Park, and a source of lasting friendships.

Bill is predeceased by his stepson Guy Szegda; and his sisters Wilma Warren, Geri Ayers, and Ernie Basel, and his brother William Bilyew. He is also predeceased by his former wife, Ann Bilyew.

He is survived by a loving family, including his daughter, Ann Bilyew; stepsons Bob Szegda, John Szegda, Matt Chemelowski, and Frank Chemelowski; stepdaughters Patti Szegda, Caroline Hall, and Cynthia Durand; cherished grandchildren, Natalie Bilyew-Conn and Carly Bilyew-Conn; and his sisters Louise Young, with whom he lived for 40 years, and Wanda McKinnis. His legacy of service, love, and commitment will continue to inspire all who knew him.

The family offers thanks to the staff of Interim Hospice, to Matilda and Kaylana from Phoenix Home Health Care, and the many dear friends and neighbors whose support and care made it possible for Bill to spend his final year of life at home.

Bill will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served with such dedication. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Harvesters Community Food Network in his honor (https://www.harvesters.org/).

Services will be held at a later date.
