Viggo Maehl, Age: 87

Viggo Maehl, 87, passed away, November 13, 2024 in Kansas City, MO.

He was born in Juelsminde, Denmark, to Knud and Lillian Maehl, on November 19, 1936.

Viggo was a large presence in many people’s lives.  He loved to share stories about life in Denmark during World War II.  He enjoyed discussing politics and found it great fun to debate anyone that didn’t agree with him.  Upon retirement Viggo started making gifts for family and friends using horseshoes and wood.

In 1980 Viggo and his wife Marga built a house at the Lake of the Ozarks where many weekends were spent entertaining friends.  He loved horseback riding and in his younger days could be found on the trail riding his favorite horse Rocky.   Most of all he loved his family and his faithful dog Jax.

He is preceded in death by, his wife, Marga Maehl, his parents Knud and Lillian Maehl; his brother Joergen Maehl and his sister Kirsten Riddervold.

Viggo is survived by his daughters Birgit Maehl and Ingrid Maehl,  his grandchildren Joe McMurray, Andrew McMurray, Jamie Maehl and Kelly Boketo-Maehl, his great grandchildren Hadyn Maehl and Layla Boketo-Maehl and his loving extended family.

Viggo was like a second dad to me from age 18 on and he will always hold such a wonderful place in my heart. I loved sitting down with him and listening to his stories of his life in Denmark and WWII. I avoided political discussions with him though! Even though we were on the same side, it was easy to get his blood boiling! I'll always have so many wonderful memories of Viggo and will miss him very much. Birgit and Ingrid - please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do at all. You two and the family are in my heart and prayers.

So sorry to learn of Viggo’s passing. He and Marga were so wonderful to me when I was in Kansas City at Trans-Mark. I loved receiving his letters. They were so detailed and interesting. I will miss his lovely banter and great advice. Thinking of you both Ingrid and Birgit🥰

I have lots of fond memories of Viggo from when I was in my 20's. Had the pleasure of visiting the Ozarks once and enjoyed an adult libation or two with Viggo. My condolences to his family!

The Maehl family and the DiFelice family shared great times together when the DiFelice family moved to Leawood in 1980. The Maehls took us in as family friends and always so very sweet and caring. Love and peace and prayers sent to Ingrid and Birgit and grandchildren of Viggo.
