Sheila Anne Bailey (Carlsen) passed away peacefully on November 9th in Lenexa, Kansas. On September 30, 1942, she was born to James and Cecilia Carlsen in Albany, California. She grew up in California and met her future husband, Robert, in high school. They began dating while they both attended San Jose College. She graduated with a BA in Education. They married on October 31, 1964 and were happily married for 58 years.
Sheila stayed home while her three children were young. She started teaching English as a Second Language classes and went on to get her Masters in Education. She taught at West Junior High School for 17 years. She was very active in her community. She was involved in teaching ESL to professionals from foreign countries at University of Missouri. She also participated in Bunco, CoMo Taiji QiGong, Alpa Delta Kappa for Women Educators, and a Memoir Writing group. She also enjoyed making greeting cards for all holidays and seasons for Tiger Place, assisted living, while her sister resided there. She continued this hobby at Benton Place, Lenexa, Kansas while she lived there the past year. She even taught card making to follow residents. She enjoyed brightening people’s days with her handmade cards, full of jokes and quotes. Sheila was a kind, loving person, who enjoyed meeting and getting to know people. She loved to hear people’s stories.
Sheila and Robert had many adventures together. They traveled often, beginning early in their marriage from East Coast to West Coast to visit their families. They traveled by car, plane and bicycle throughout their lives together.
Sheila was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bailey, and her sister, Pamela Pooley. She will be greatly missed by her children, Tobin Bailey and his wife Megan; Christine (Bailey) Phifer and her husband Ted; and Pauline (Bailey) McKivergan and her husband Patrick; her seven grandchildren; sister-in-law; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 5, from 1-4pm, at Robert and Sheila’s home, 2805 Greenbriar Drive, Columbia, Missouri.
