Ted Allan Phillips, Age: 73
May 31, 1951 - Feb 09, 2025

Due to weather the service has been postponed to NEXT WEEK:

Wednesday, February 26th!

Ted Allan Phillips, 73, finished the race peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Ted was born on May 31, 1951, to Jack and Edith Phillips in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America alongside his father and brother in Troop 288, earning his Eagle Scout rank and being honored as Warrior Small Far Away Hawk in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He attended Oak Park High School, where he met the love of his life, Kathleen VanBebber. Their first unofficial date was on February 9, 1968, and they were rarely seen apart  for the next 57 years. They both graduated in 1969 and married on July 10, 1971, at the Gladstone Church of Christ.

Ted’s love of automobiles began at a young age, often leaving Kathy to watch as he meticulously cleaned car parts. On April 1, 1977, he opened his first automobile repair station, selling gas for Texaco. He remained self-employed in the automotive industry for the rest of his life. Running his own business from the age of 26 meant long hours and plenty of stress, but Ted firmly believed that "the harder you work, the luckier you get." His dedication blessed his family in countless ways.

A man of faith, Ted was baptized at the Gladstone Church of Christ in 1970, where he remained a devoted member and servant. Over the years, he served as a Joy Bus captain, a deacon, and, beginning in 2002, an elder—a role he held through the church's transition to the Heartland Church of Christ and until his passing.

Ted was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Kathy were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He took an active role in their lives—helping with Scouts, coaching softball and basketball, and attending countless band concerts, theatrical performances, and sporting events. He enjoyed traveling with his family, anywhere from tropical beaches and the Holy Lands with Kathy to ball tournaments and Branson with the grandkids, spending time on the lake with the Hudkins, and grilling the best steaks in town.

Ted’s life was filled with more than its fair share of accidents, injuries, and illnesses - even surviving a hurricane- yet he faced every challenge with resilience. He lived by the words he instilled in his children: “Life’s not fair” and “Don’t do half a job.” No matter what he endured, he fought valiantly and with a positive attitude and unwavering faith.

Ted had a strong personality, but a soft heart. He was generous, always assuming the best in people and offering guidance, mentorship, and support. Kathy often joked that he’d get to heaven before her because of his unwavering trust in others. There was nothing he couldn’t fix, and he was always ready to lend a hand. He was meticulous in everything he did, but always moved at his own pace. Kathy affectionately called him "the turtle," always moving forward steadily but surely. His family was his greatest love, even risking his own safety to rescue the Sally doll Lindsay dropped in a rapid cold river. His family will continue to enjoy gathering around their fire pit on their large swings, a family building project Ted proudly oversaw during COVID.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, C. Jack and Edith Phillips, and his brother, Jack Phillips. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathy; his children, Lenaira and Brandon Day, Russell and Kelli Phillips, Lauren Phillips, and Lindsay and Jestin Mann; his grandchildren, Steffen, Keaton, Aundria, and Harrison Day; Molly and Ty Pratt; Rhett and Vivian Phillips; Hank, Sally, and Teddy Mann; and his great-grandchildren, Layla, Willow, and Marlee Jo Day, and Daisy Pratt. He is also survived by his sisters, Pam (Marc) Rowe and Jensine (Dan) Kinate; his sister-in-law, Dona Phillips-Proffitt (Jim Proffitt);  his beloved cousin Rick (Reva) Lichty; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends he considered family.

Friends ,Parkville ,Missouri

Our family met Ted around 10 years ago. His grandson (Harrison Day) and our son Blake played Baseball together. You could definitely see how much he cared for his family, but also others around him. Our families shared many great experiences together because of baseball and the many different places we traveled. One thing that really stuck out to us was his love of people, and his calm, gentle nature. Many prayers from our family to yours, Ted will be greatly missed. The Morrow’s

This hurts our hearts to know you are hurting. Holding many memories and some regrets. We had hoped to come see you here in our retirement but will wait to see you there. Ted, if you come across a "young blonde girl" there, let her know we are still coming. Kathy, I always think of you and Ted when we eat Cheri's famous "stoup". Prayers and love to you all.

Forever friend ,Edmond ,Oklahoma

Kathy and Family, David and I hold so many wonderful memories close to our hearts as we remember our early years as young couples at the Gladstone church. You and Ted were so much fun, sharing your thoughts and lives with us as we began our journey as young families. I loved Ted’s voice and his kind of dry sense of humor and his laugh! He always had a word of encouragement and practical thoughts to share. Together, you and Ted showed others how to have fun together, and as a family. I will always smile when I remember Ted.We love you guys, and will be praying for you all. Kim
