Raymond Colin Maher, Age: 82
Jan 18, 1943 - Feb 24, 2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Raymond Colin "Ray" Maher on February 24, 2025, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Born on January 18, 1943, to Edward Maher and Claire Gutschenritter in Red Oak, Iowa, Ray spent his youth immersed in athletics. He excelled in football, basketball, and track, lettering in each sport. His remarkable talent earned him recognition as a tri-state diving champion and an all-state football player. His prowess on the field led him to play collegiate football at both the University of Nebraska and Northwest Missouri State. Ray's dedication to sports was later honored with his induction into the Red Oak High School Hall of Fame.

Following two years of service in the United States Army, Ray pursued higher education with unwavering determination. He earned a master's degree in Education and a specialist’s degree in Administration. His passion for guiding young minds led him to Truman High School in Independence, Missouri, where he dedicated thirty years as a guidance counselor, coach, and eventually vice principal. His impact on countless students and colleagues was immeasurable.

Ray lived a life enriched by his many passions. Whether playing softball, engaging with fellow veterans through the VFW, or participating in the American Legion, he found joy in camaraderie and competition. But above all else, golf held a special place in his heart—a game he played not just for sport but for the friendships and moments of peace it provided.

His greatest adventure began when he met Sandra Kay Horton while teaching a semester at Southwest High School. Their connection blossomed into a love that spanned more than five decades. On May 27, 1972, Ray and Kay were married, embarking on a journey filled with travel, laughter, and cherished family moments. Together they raised two children, Matt and Amy, passing down their zest for life and love of exploration. Ray was not just a father but a steadfast supporter—always present with encouragement and wisdom. He often reminded his children that “you can do anything you want if you set your mind on it.”

Later in life, Ray embraced one of his most treasured roles—Papa Ray to his four grandchildren: Jillian, Ryder, Katie, and Grace. Whether playing endless games of dominoes or cheering them on at spelling bees and sporting events, he poured boundless love into every moment shared with them.

Ray was known for his selflessness and humor—a man whose presence brought warmth and laughter wherever he went. Those who knew him could always count on his steady support and kind heart. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void but also countless memories that will be cherished forever.

Preceding Ray in death were his parents and brothers George and Ralph Maher. He is survived by his beloved wife Kay Maher; son Matt (Marisa) Maher; daughter Amy (Eric) Howell; grandchildren Jillian, Ryder, Katie, and Grace; close family friend Adam Shoaf; sister Vineta McArdle; brothers Fred Maher and Phil Maher; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Honoring Ray’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Parkinson Disease Association at https://support.apdaparkinson.org

Though Ray has left this world, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched—the lessons he taught both inside the classroom and beyond will continue shaping those who had the privilege of knowing him.
