Marilyn Kay Aspey, 72, of Grandview, Missouri, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, surrounded by family. Born March 27, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Marilyn carried with her a spirit that was both ornery and caring — a rare blend that left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
In 1971, Marilyn made the South Kansas City area her home, where she and her husband Richard built a life rich in family, friendship, and laughter. A lover of flowers, music, and books, Marilyn’s talents extended far beyond her passions — she enjoyed crocheting, making keepsakes for her grand kids, and was an enthusiastic babysitter to many lucky little ones while she was able. Later in life, she never missed a chance to join a lively game of bingo or spend time painting ceramics and creating little pieces of joy.
Marilyn was the heart of her family, a playful spirit who could make any room come alive. She was famous for her mischievous love of sweets — often caught “liberating” snacks around the halls of John Knox and devouring cupcakes with a grin that let you know she was up to something. She even led several spirited campaigns to “bust out” of the Village Care Center, calling on her husband for assistance. These campaigns caused the staff to have multiple calls with the family and landed her under “house arrest” for a period of time. Her antics eventually brought laughter to those around her.
Those who knew her best will smile remembering her favorite saying — whenever asked where she was off to, she would flash a twinkle in her eye and say, “I’m going crazy!” — a fitting motto for a woman who embraced life with such humor and heart.
Marilyn is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Aspey; her children, Ila “Richie” Aspey, JR (Cassie)Aspey, Dustin Aspey, Tammy (Jeremy) Pierce, Daughter in law Cindi Aspey and her cherished grandchildren, Alicia Briggs, Caitlyn (Alex) Johnstone, Ryan Pierce, Taylor Pierce, Kayla Aspey, Wyatt Aspey, and Shayne Aspey and great grandson Henry along with many other family and friends.
She was greeted in heaven by her dear son, Scott Aspey; grandson, Tyler Aspey; sister, Terrill Hope; her parents, Ila and Harold Sorensen; and many others.
Marilyn’s memory will live on in the countless moments of laughter she gave so freely, in every flower that blooms, and in every sweet treat shared among family. Her playful spirit and enormous heart will be missed beyond measure but celebrated always.
A graveside dedication will be held to honor her life and the joy she brought to all who knew her on May 17, 2025, at 1pm.
