David F. Cheek passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026. He was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City on March 6, 1953 and spent his entire life in the Kansas City area. He attended Highlands Elementary, Indian Hills Junior High and Shawnee Mission East High, graduating in 1971. In high school he participated in all manner of sports, and excelled in baseball, football and basketball. He was a letterman in football and once single handedly organized a 48 hour outdoor basketball “marathon” to raise funds for charity.
After high school he moved to Hays, Kansas and enrolled at Fort Hays State University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. In Hays he met Janice Munsch, and they married in 1980. Their daughter, Cassandra, was born in 1982. In the early 1980’s David worked briefly in the trucking industry after college before moving back to Kansas City and joining his father in the plumbing and heating business. He earned his master plumber’s license and went on to manage Cheek Plumbing and Heating for more than 3 decades, eventually selling the business before retirement.
David was proficient at any skill he chose to pursue. Over the years he maintained his interest in sports, excelling at bowling and golf, especially golf, once completing over 100 rounds in a single year. He dedicated himself to learning about the investment world and became an accomplished stock trader. He had an exceptional memory for facts, statistics and trivia, was passionate about history and politics, loved a good joke and was not shy about stating his opinions.
He is preceded in death by his father Benjamin F. Cheek, and mother Peggy Marshall Cheek. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice Cheek, daughter Cassandra Sewell, son in law Michael Sewell, grandson Benjamin Connor Sewell, and brother Michael Cheek.
He will be laid to rest at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens.
