David William Coy passed away on April 15, 2026, at his home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on March 22, 1942, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Truman and Ruth Coy. After World War II his family relocated to New Holland, Pennsylvania, where he spent his formative years. David graduated from Garden Spot High School in 1960, and from Pennsylvania State University in 1964.
David devoted his career as an Environmental Engineer to improve air quality. After relocating to Durham, NC in 1976, he spent nearly three decades working for RTI International in Research Triangle Park NC. There his work focused on air pollution-related research. He completed his tenure at RTI, in 2004, holding the position of Research Director of Environmental Engineering. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of New Jersey and North Carolina.
He was married for 60 years to his loving wife Suzann Kurtz Coy, also a Garden Spot High School graduate. David and Suzann shared a lifelong passion for outdoor activities. They enjoyed playing tennis together, taking family trips to North Carolina and other East Coast beaches, and exploring the beauty of America’s National Parks. In retirement, they expanded their travels to include National Wildlife Refuges and birding destinations throughout North and Central America, creating lasting memories and a cherished collection of bird photographs. In 2014, they relocated to Kansas City to enjoy many cherished years with family.
David was predeceased by his daughter, Diane Coy Mayer, in 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Suzann Kurtz Coy; his son, Greg (Laura) of Kansas City; his son-in-law, Kirk Mayer; his grandsons, Isaac, Alexander, and Ian Coy; and his granddaughter Kaitlyn Mayer of Boston, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Hostetter (husband Milton still living), but also leaves siblings Judy Kurtz (and husband Robert), both still living, of Lititz PA; and Donald Coy (wife Mary Kae), both still living, of Boyertown, PA.
