Kevin Peter Kaman, age 66, of Overland Park, KS left us unexpectedly after a brief illness on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Never one to seek the spotlight, he skipped the fanfare of July 4th and instead, in his own time – 4:20 PM to be exact – created what will no doubt be remembered as his final bit of humorous irony for those of us who knew him so well. From now on, family lore will certainly recall how he managed to honor one of his favorite pastimes even as he had to leave us.
Kevin was born in Hartford, Connecticut on January 13, 1960, to the late Peter and Frances Kaman. He was the oldest of three, followed by his brother Mark and sister Robin. The family moved to Overland Park in 1976. Kevin would graduate from Shawnee Mission South High School before choosing Homestead, Florida as his home. It was here that he began his lifelong career as an irrigation and landscaping specialist. Florida also brought his favorite accomplishment – his son Joshua was born there in 1990. Following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Overland Park once again became home.
On Halloween in 1998 he was introduced to his neighbor Pollie Wheeler and her son Tyler. It didn’t take long to realize they were a good match and on Christmas Eve 1998 he proposed. On June 12, 1999, Kevin and Josh married Pollie and Tyler and began their journey as a blended family with a “family moon” to Colorado. Tyler and wife Ellie blessed them with Kason, Beau and Mila – finally a girl! Josh and wife Leann multiplied their blessings with Jamison and Weston. He went by Kevin, Kev, Par, and Dad, but his absolute favorite name was “KK”, the title given to him by his grandkids. He adored them with all his heart, and the feeling was entirely mutual. He enjoyed trips to Texas, Ohio, and Connecticut for visits with family and friends and always maintained his love of skiing in Colorado.
After 40 years of perfecting lawns, he began to wind down but continued taking care of loyal customers he truly enjoyed through May 2025. As a retiree, he dedicated most of his efforts to maintaining the most beautiful yard on his block – or any other for that matter. He was also the best stay at home husband Pollie could have asked for.
He is survived by his loving wife, sons and grandchildren along with his brother Mark and his wife Karen, his sister Robin and her husband Joel, his sister-in-law Suzanne and her husband Robert, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, great-nephews and nieces and a multitude of cousins in Connecticut and Texas.
We will all miss his sometimes-wicked sense of humor and his good strong bear hugs. An ice-cold Bud Light raised in good faith will always serve to represent this very good man we will all miss so very, very much.
