Thomas John Schweitzer, 85, of Kansas City, went to be with the Lord on Monday July 27, 2026. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Tom was born July 22, 1941 to John and Gertrude (Jagusch) Schweitzer. He was a 1959 graduate of Wyandotte High School, a 1965 graduate of Pittsburg State University with a degree in Accounting, and a 1974 graduate of Central Missouri State University with a Master’s in Business Administration.
Upon Tom’s 1965 graduation, he entered the United States Navy as an officer. Tom served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade on the USS O’Hare during Vietnam from 1965-1968. After his honorable discharge in 1968 he married Marilyn Jane Sell and they celebrated 45 years together before she passed on June 24, 2014.
Tom worked at Armco Steel in Kansas City for 20 years as a corporate accountant. He retired in 1988 to be the CFO of a local video yearbook company. He also worked for KAW Transport, Vocational Services, and MAST Ambulance. Additionally, he enjoyed helping people with their taxes for over 30 years.
Community service and service to his church congregation was a lifetime priority. Tom volunteered his time and talents to many organizations. He utilized his accounting skills as treasurer/financial secretary and/or president for parent organizations/teams including but not limited to: Clay-Platte YMCA Gymnastics team, Old Pike Country Club, Northland Neighborhoods, Church Council, Stewardship Committee, TLC Men’s Group, and North Kansas City Rotary. He developed many friends over his years of volunteering.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and wife. Survivors include his brother Robert (Cheryl) Schweitzer, 2 daughters, Karin (Sean) Shaughnessey and Kristi (Mike) Cavanaugh; 4 grandchildren, Megan and Daniel Shaughnessey, Colton and Thomas Cavanaugh; and nephews/nieces.
As a Naval Officer, Tom developed a love for all things nautical. He and his family enjoyed spending weekends on their cruiser at the Lake of the Ozarks for over 30 years. In honor of his love of nautical things, the family asks you to wear navy/blue and white attire or any nautical themed clothes to his Celebration of Life.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM, Service at 12:00 Noon, and Lunch to follow at St. James Lutheran Church, 1104 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO 64118.
