Steve was born on October 6,1950 to Frank and (Nova) Imogene Johnson.  Steve graduated from Truman High School in Independence, MO in 1968.  He then went on to attend college classes and began his work career.  He spent many years working for both Armco Steel (GST Steel) and Liberty Hardwoods where he made many lasting friendships.

In July 1971 he was united in marriage to Gayla Lynn Gumm and together they welcomed 2 children, Shane and Mandi.  Steve and Gayla remained married until Gayla’s sudden passing in 1996.

To Steve’s family and friends, he was known as a “jack of all trades” and the “go to guy” when someone needed help.  He was always willing to lend a hand and give advice when needed.  He was also a gifted woodworking craftsman.  Family and friends cherish each piece made just for them with love and perfection.

Steve was very proud to have grown up “in the country”.  His love of nature and the outdoors continued throughout his adult life.  One of his greatest joys was hunting and fishing with family and friends.  He especially loved hunting and fishing trips with his son, Shane and spending hours doing these activities with his grandchildren.

He was a very special “Papa” to his grandchildren: Payton, Riley, Brynn, and Reese.  He loved making memories with them with weekend sleepovers, biscuit and gravy breakfasts, craft projects, and attending every possible game and/or activity they were involved in.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and (Nova) Imogene Johnson, a baby sister Linda Johnson, a brother Thedford Johnson, his first wife Gayla (Gumm) Johnson, as well as other extended family members.

He leaves behind his current wife of 28 years Melody (Chambers) Johnson, son Shane (Dawn) Johnson, daughter Mandi (Josh) Conklin, stepson Aaron (Stacey) Stephenson, grandson Payton (Grace) Stephenson, granddaughters Riley (Anthony) Dijkman, Brynn Biro, Reese Biro, brother Mark Johnson, as well as many other beloved family members.

There are no words to describe how much Steve will be missed. We’ll greatly miss his stories and sense of humor. We await the day we’ll join him at Heaven’s gates where he’ll give one of his big bear hugs.

A Celebration of Life open house will be held October 2nd, 2026 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 100 NE Brizendine Rd. Blue Springs, MO 64014.
