Linda Rae Scherer was born in May 1937 to Granville and Gladys (Shedd) Hedrick in Independence, MO. She died September 20, 2026. She was 89 years old.
Linda was an only child, but she was surrounded by loving parents, grandmothers and aunts.
She graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1955. She worked at Bundschu Department store on Independence Square and the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
She was active in the Liberty Street RLDS Zion’s League and was baptized when she was 16 years old. She had many happy memories of Zion’s League and later Older Youth Group.
While attending a New Year’s Eve Party at the Auditorium, she met Sam Scherer. They were married later that year on June 8, 1958.
There were two daughters born, Julia and Kerri. Linda was a wonderful mother and active with her children. She was involved in the PTA and one year served as the president. She also volunteered with the 4H club when her daughters were active in the organization.
Linda began working full time in the 1970’s. She worked at Riss Trucking until she moved with Sam to Phoenix in 1981. While in Phoenix she continued her clerical work at various trucking companies until she retired. Soon after she retired, Sam passed away and she decided it was time to return home to Independence.
She bought a home and lived there with her daughter Kerri until 2023. Kerri needed physical assistance. As the years passed, this became too much for Linda. She then had needs of her own, so she moved in with her daughter Julie. She enjoyed being able to spend so much time with her girls throughout her life.
In 2024, she was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The next two and a half years were spent going to doctor appointments and getting transfusions, but she was always cheerful and kind even as her health slowly failed. She loved the simple things in life, spending time with her family or friends, watching the birds and flowers outside of her windows, reading and doing puzzles. She was always content.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by daughter Julia (Scott) Nixon, and Kerri Scherer. Two grandsons, Daniel (Lauren) and Robert (Chante). Six grandsons, Bryce, Alec, William, Atticus, Connor and Bowen and many nieces and nephews and friends.
She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. But as a great-grandmother she was affectionately known as GG. She was faithful, cheerful and kind to all she met. She will be greatly missed.
Her Memorial service will be October 3, 2026, at South Crysler Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ, 16101 Salisbury Road, Independence, MO. Visitation will be at 10:00 followed by the service at 11:00.
