Gerald “Jerry” Long, 78, of Linwood, Kansas, passed away on October 5, 2026 at home. Jerry was born on August 17, 1948 to Donald and Alma Long in Topeka, KS. Jerry grew up in Tonganoxie, KS and graduated from Tonganoxie High School. After graduation, Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Saratoga.
Jerry met Patricia Schwartz, and the two were married in 1971. Together, they welcomed two children, Michelle and Kevin. Following the end of their marriage in 1994, Jerry remained unmarried.
Jerry loved the Jayhawks, Chiefs and the outdoors. He found some of his greatest enjoyment in fishing, hunting, and spending time at a special place that belongs to a dear friend. He treasured the time he spent there, where he could enjoy the peace and quiet of the outdoors and simply do the things he loved. Jerry was also a churchgoer, and his faith was an important part of his life.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Cookie Long. He leaves behind his children, Michelle (Ted) Growney of Kansas City, MO and Kevin (Amy) Long of Spring Hill, KS and five grandchildren, Allison, Abby, Ashlyn, Blake and Bryson; three great-grandchildren; sisters Brenda Freeman of Topeka, KS and Sherri Chapman (Bill) of Topeka, KS; brother Darrell Long of Overland Park, KS, along with many nieces and nephews.
Jerry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and moments that will be cherished by his family and friends. His love of the outdoors, his service to his country, and the life he shared with those around him will remain a part of his legacy. Though he is no longer here, he will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of the people who loved him.
May he rest peacefully and never be forgotten.
